I am autistic and could do with help working out what, if any, subtext this comment had.

I've a new friend (6 months or so) who I get on very well with. I often give her a lift home after work. Predominantly, I pull up, she hugs me goodbye and jumps out. In the past 3 weeks there have been 3 times where she has stayed in the car chatting to me to the extent that I've ended up pulling over and turning the engine off. The first two times was for about 30 minutes and the 3rd was about 10. Just before leaving on the 3rd time she said "Well here we are again. Sitting in your car, having a heart to heart". I didn't know what to say so jsut passed her her items from the back seat.

To me that's simply stating a fact but I understand that it may have ment to have some sort of subtext to it. But I have no idea what.

For context, we get on well but obviously after such a short time we dont know a huge amount about each other yet. Neither of us are single.

Any ideas? What would you mean if you said that?

to me it signifies a comment about bonding. If take it as a positive comment.

She’s just reflecting on the fact she is enjoying the friendship.

So if I were you I’d have said ‘Yes!’ To reinforce I enjoyed it too, passed her her stuff and hugged her goodbye.

So don’t worry about it, and carry on being friendly.

She appreciates your growing friendship.

Shinyandnew1 · 12/11/2023 09:32

I wouldn’t read anything into that. It might start to piss me off having to wait outside someone’s house for 30 minutes after I’d just driven them home though!!

SeethroughDress · 12/11/2023 09:33

Are you suggesting the subtext you think she may have intended is ‘I’m attracted to you’?

I wouldn’t think so, necessarily. It could perfectly easily be more ‘Here we are again, chatting.’

Hillrunning · 12/11/2023 09:50

Oh I'm pleased everyone is taking it as a positive. I thought she might be trying to say she doesn't like that it might become a habit . Or that she was suggesting that have feelings for her? We are both bisexual so I suppose there is scope for that assumption.

Maybe I should just not try to work it out?

Fellow autistic here. It means she likes you and is comfortable talking to you. You've a potential new friend.
