Stranger getting into hotel room

DangerousMouse · 12/11/2023 07:13

My son is away for the night with my husband, and he has just text me to say that a stranger got into the room and got into the bed with my husband in the night! How can this even happen? It's a premier inn, don't they have key cards?
I'm still waiting for the details from him but wow how terrible is that?!

@dylanschicken I am aware of the quote function thankyou, but what with it being Sunday i thought the thread police might have a day off.

I wasn't policing you ffs I was explaining how your random comment was taken out of context: the quote function would have avoided that's happening. I don't give a shit if you use it or not but don't expect anyone to know wtf you are taking about if you don't.

Sidebeforeself · 12/11/2023 11:23

Eh?

I used to be receptionist in a rather nice small hotel in the 80s. Because this was pre digital, everyone had an actual key with a massive fob for their room. The only master keys were held by head chambermaid & manager. Not possible for this to happen then!

And we had a handwritten paper 'spreadsheet' - pencil for the booking, inked in when they arrived and photocopied for chambermaids each morning so they knew which to clean.

Incredibly simple and no fuck ups.

I always put the deadlock on and I have ocasionally dragged table or armchair if there is one over to put against the door.

What is the likihood of a sleep walking man and finding dh door unlocked

Pretty unlikely I'd have thought... but it happened!

@cardibach

Internal door locks are easy to open for people who want to get in.

Lots of these type videos on YouTube and similar for different locks.

The idea of a wedge (and some come with alarms) it to both put off opportunists, and alert you to a potential intruder before they get in.

I’m sure they are. The issue here isn’t that though, is it? It’s incorrect key cards. (Though as it turned out, not even that). You don’t need other devices to stop an incorrectly coded key card allowing access to your room.
Also - a wedge won’t put opportunists off trying as they won’t know it’s there…

In a hotel a sleepwalker / someone drunk / someone half asleep and confused ending up in the corridor is much more common than you'd think.

With the combination of the door being ajar, well that's just unlucky.

Not quite the same thing but a few years ago I booked two rooms with Travelodge for ds (profoundly deaf and autistic) and his support worker who were attending my nieces wedding.
I booked online and then rang them up to ensure that the support worker was in the room next door. I explained to the support worker that he would be in the next room before they left the reception. Support worker saw ds into his room and then tried to get into the room next door. Slid in key thing didn't work.. He was six doors up...
I spoke to TL the next day and asked what would have happened if there had been a fire? The lady said she didn't want to think about it... I said that neither did I and they hadn't done their job properly.
I was given a free night at a TL as an apology!

Always always use a door stop in a hotel room.

I have a little security gadget that screws onto the door from Amazon that I use when I am travelling to secure the door. Happens ALL the time!

Interesting..... Link?
I would really like something like that!

DangerousMouse · 12/11/2023 12:03

Apparently the poor, poor bloke was found by security 7 floors below and had gone out of a fire door.

When DH and DS was at breakfast they sent maintenance to the room to check the door, when DH went back to the room after breakfast, maintenance had left the door wide open, with all the belongings inside!
They have been refunded breakfast, DS was given some treats, lots of apologies and they are conducting an investigation which DH will get the outcome of.
To get the good night guarantee he will have to speak with customer services tomorrow

Did they wedge the door open and leave or had the just gone to get tools because it was not closing at all?

Not that it matters either way as someone should have stayed at the door if they couldn't close it, juts curios as to how it came to be left wide open

For leaving their belongings exposed I'd be after more than free breakfast!! Your poor husband and son!

Maintenance had finished in the room, it had been left a good few feet open

How?

The doors do not stay open?

DangerousMouse · 12/11/2023 12:10

Because there is a fault with the door, that's how this whole episode came about

Right. Yet you said maintenance had finished, I can't work out how they would be finished with the faulty door if it could not close and had to be left wide open?

DangerousMouse · 12/11/2023 12:12

Finished as in, they had left, no tools, no one there

Finished as in, they had left, no tools, no one there

But they left the previously closed door open wide?

DangerousMouse · 12/11/2023 12:14

Yes, when DH went to breakfast they locked the door, when they returned no one was there but the door was significantly open

OP posts:
DangerousMouse · 12/11/2023 12:15

They just went to the room to grab stuff and check out so saying maintenance were finished is likely to be incorrect, sorry, but maintenance weren't there, no note, sign, tools or any sign of them

Then what happens when your DH tried to close it?

DangerousMouse · 12/11/2023 12:17

I don't know, sorry, he didn't mention

OP posts:
dylanschicken · 12/11/2023 12:19

He's now had issues getting where they need to go due to public transport problems, not a good day for him!
