Stranger getting into hotel room

DangerousMouse · 12/11/2023 07:13

My son is away for the night with my husband, and he has just text me to say that a stranger got into the room and got into the bed with my husband in the night! How can this even happen? It's a premier inn, don't they have key cards?
I'm still waiting for the details from him but wow how terrible is that?!

How does a door stop protect you against gunmen??

It wasn't a gunman, it was a sleepwalker. So a doorstop would have done the job.

InSpainTheRain · 12/11/2023 10:15

I was once given a hotel key card that was a master key and opened any room! I found out as I accidentally went to a room on the wrong floor and got in. I left immediately and there was no one in it (luckily). Then I told my colleagues and found my keys opened all rooms.

I now always take a rubber door wedge with me and ensure the door is locked/chained then put the wedge in place too as an extra measure. It's quite light and small so easy to pack and I just feel safer.

@dylanschicken I was responding to a PP who said they always take a doorstop in case of gunmen in America

That wasn't clear to me at all.

Are you aware there is a quote function?

DangerousMouse · 12/11/2023 10:21

I think we need to start with making sure DH closes the door, locking it from the inside is probably what we need to aim for

I wouldn't wedge my door shut - rather risk a stranger entering than death if the place catches fire.

CantFindTheBeat · 12/11/2023 10:24

@cardibach

Internal door locks are easy to open for people who want to get in.

Lots of these type videos on YouTube and similar for different locks.

The idea of a wedge (and some come with alarms) it to both put off opportunists, and alert you to a potential intruder before they get in.

This. Fire-crews are equipped to get through a locked door, but not one that's wedged closed from the inside.

Same reason that sneaking extra people / kids into a hotel room is risky. Everyone unconscious due to smoke inhalation, dark, room full of smoke, room manifest says 2 adults + 1 child so that's what the fire crew look for and rescue before moving on to the next room. The kid thats woken up frightened and crawled under the bed will never be looked for.

Has he reported the faulty door?

DangerousMouse · 12/11/2023 10:45

I'm not sure, he was speaking with the manager before breakfast

Remove wedge to get out in case of fire! Obviously

If you are conscious and able to remove wedge fine!
If unconscious, quite difficult for people to get in to help.

FettleOfKish · 12/11/2023 10:52

@Brumbies Well obviously, but that doesn't work so well if you're unconscious.

Gnomegnomegnome · 12/11/2023 10:52

Dh recently walked in on a poor woman sat in bed. The hotel double booked apparently. He was very apologetic.

@NotAHoot tell me about kettles and hairdryers.

Mooshamoo · 12/11/2023 10:55

I think hotels are actually really dangerous. In most of them, there is no way that you can fully lock your door. So many male staff members can get in.

I've stayed in hotels where male staff members just burst into the room when I was in bed.

One hotel i stayed in had a glass panel over the door. A male staff member got a chair, stood up on it and took a photo of me in bed through the glass panel.

I saw it and then went online and saw that another woman had said that a male staff member had took a photo of her too.

Happened to me with DS who was 8 at the time in London but we were the other way round. We had the key to someone else’s room. An American man who was in bed sleeping when we entered the room.

Same thing happened to me but luckily there was no-one in the room, just their possessions.

Especially scary in the US where people obviously have guns.

Princesspollyyy · 12/11/2023 10:58

That's why you always deadlock the room you're in, so this can't happen.

SerendipityJane · 12/11/2023 11:02

A (UK) firefighter friend told me they never trust the records and do their own searches. One reason a "Baby on board" sticker has always been a complete waste of time (although he put it somewhat more colourfully). This was in the 90s.

Georgyporky · 12/11/2023 11:02

There's usually some form of lock/bolt on the inside to stop people getting in when the room is occupied.

determinedtomakethiswork · 12/11/2023 11:05

DustyLee123 · 12/11/2023 07:55

This is why you should take a door stop with you, and jam it under you door. I have one made of light wood, so it no bother to carry.

But in case of fire, no one can get you out.

Sidebeforeself · 12/11/2023 11:09

@dylanschicken I am aware of the quote function thankyou, but what with it being Sunday i thought the thread police might have a day off.

I used to be a hotel receptionist in a not terribly nice hotel. This really shouldn't happen, as we would normally check the name before making a new key card for someone locked out.

We once had a huge problem when our entire booking system broke completely and we had to use an excel spreadsheet. It was only one shift but it was awful. Total chaos with one of the other receptionists being totally unable to adjust to using a different system and putting people into the same room. Horrible shift - so embarrassing and potentially dangerous!

My takeaway from working in hotels though was that I now don't use the coffee and tea making facilities 🤢 and I wouldn't be keen on using the hairdryers either.

Also, people can be absolutely horrible. We had a few total cunts stay with us. Honestly, so many stories, but for another thread!

Please start this thread 🙏 I'm invested now 🤣

I’ve got to ask….. why not the hairdryers???

What is the likihood of a sleep walking man and finding dh door unlocked
