How old were you parents when they had you?

And how old were you when you had children? Just interested if things have changed much over the generations. My mum had me at 21 and my brother at 22. My dad was 28 when I was born. I was 35 when my DS was born.

@Goatymum that’s sad. Makes me really worry for my only child, had at 42 while her dad was 53..

That said, my mum had me at 20 but died when I was 40, before my DC was born

Parents had me in their late 20s, and my brother in their mid 30s. I had my first and second in my early 30s.

Almost everyone I know - from unskilled workers with very little education, to professionals, and highly educated people, (over a variety of middle, upper, and working classes,) had their first child by 32-33. Most had their last by 38-40.

24 and 25. I had DS at 23. The difference is that my parents had been married for years, were homeowners about to trade up to a big semi, and had planned a family - whereas I was a year out of university and skint, in a shaky relationship and rented hovel flat. It took me decades to get back on track. Had I not got pregnant by accident, I would probably have had DC much later or even not at all. So I'm glad I had the accident when I was the age that DS is now!

DetOliviaBenson · 26/06/2024 21:56

My parents were 21 when I was born and 25 when my sister was born. I was 24 when I had dd1 and 28 when I had dd2.

Sapphire387 · 26/06/2024 22:41

My parents were 27 (mum) and 30 (dad) when I was born.

I was 25 when I had my first, 27 when I had my second, and 37 when I had my third.

I felt like a 'young' parent first time round - was the first of my friendship/peer group to have dc. I don't feel 'old' to have had a third last year at 37. Lots of people around me my age having babies.

adviceneeded1990 · 26/06/2024 22:49

Me - Mum was 30, Dad 33.
DH - MIL was 28, FIL 31.

We are 33 and 40 and trying to conceive our first via IVF 😞

It’s definitely changing generationally though in the way that women tend to have fewer children and have their babies younger or older and not both! My maternal Gran had 5, her first at 20, last at 40. Paternal Gran had 8, her first at 19, last at 44!

My DM was 36 and my DDad was a month off 39. (I was born in 1963). But I was their third one. I think I was something of an afterthought,to be honest,as my 2 brothers are 8 years and 5.5 years older than me. My DM REALLY wanted a girl but my Ddad dug his heels in for ages, saying 'It will probably be another boy'. Eventually, after a huge row (which,my DM told me, involved throwing several bags of baby clothes down the stairs at my DDad,in a temper 😂) he relented saying 'If it's another boy',tough. No more'. Luckily, DM got her wish! I was 19 when I had my DD. Still a child really when I look back now.

fussychica · 26/06/2024 23:04

My parents had me in the 1950s aged 29 & 30. I had DS in the 1990s aged 36 & DH 35.

Gowlett · 26/06/2024 23:06

My mum was 22 having me, 23 having my sister.

Moveoverdarlin · 26/06/2024 23:07

My Mum was 32 my Dad was 38. When I had my first child I was 35 and DH was 38. Three years later I had another one.

SnapdragonToadflax · 26/06/2024 23:08

32 and 33 in the early 80s - old for the time.

I had my child at 36.

ShiftySquirrel · 26/06/2024 23:12

My parents were mid 20s-30 child bearing, I was the same. DH's parents were 35-40, and he was a little older.

Mils mum had 13, the first 6 had 13 month gaps! She had her last (a surprise rather than the menopause) at 46.

HiImDory · 26/06/2024 23:28

My mum was 32 when she had me (her 4th child), she was 23 when she had her 1st child though.

I was 17 when I had my first, 21 when I had my second and 23 when I had my last.

Wednesdaysotherchild · 26/06/2024 23:38

Mum - 33

Me (if this baby makes it) - 42

Tumbleweed101 · 26/06/2024 23:50

My dad was 25 and my mum was 27 when I was born (eldest). I had my eldest when I was 22. None of my children have their own children and the eldest is 26 soon (followed by siblings 24,18 and 15). My eldest two have no plans to ever have children.

Portfun24 · 26/06/2024 23:53

My mum was 24, 26, 28 and 36 when she had us. My dad was 27, 29 and 31. Stepdad was 34 with my younger sister and that was his first.

I was 19, 24 and 27 with mine. Dh was same age.

rokaaroundthechristmastree · 27/06/2024 02:59

Mum was 30 and dad was 44 when they had me in the 90's. First and only child for both of them.

Conversely I had mine at 20 and 22 I think.

annieloulou · 27/06/2024 03:28

Mum was 32, dad was 46 - considered very old for first (and only) child in late 1960s. They met later in life. There were girls in my years at school with grandads the same age as my dad.

I was 28 and 30 - average for the mid 1990s.

novocaine4thesoul · 27/06/2024 04:12

Mum was 26 when she had me, then 29 my sister (although we are 2.5 years apart). She had an earlier child aged 19. I had my first son (stillborn) at 28, my next son at 29, my first daughter at 30 (due the same date a year apart), and my second daughter at 36, and my next son at 37 (same date for the son, and yes, we have heard all of the jokes thank you). The last one was hard work as a baby so that was the end of any more. x

DeadsoulsAngel · 27/06/2024 04:50

Mum was 28, Dad 30. Same as me and DH (well, a month off 30 for DH).

mum commented she was (by a bit) the oldest on the ward with a first baby. I was average…

garlictwist · 27/06/2024 04:54

I'm 43. My mum was 35 when she had me and 37 when she had my sister. I've not had kids but my sister was 32 and 34 when she had hers.

decionsdecisions62 · 27/06/2024 05:01

I'm 57 and my mum was 40 when she had me. My dad 38. Yes I was an accident. In 1967 it wasn't common to have a baby at 40.

addictedtotheflats · 27/06/2024 05:16

Mum 35 and 37
Me 30 and 35

Queenofwistfulthinking · 27/06/2024 06:40

My BM was 15.
