For putting staff back on tills. At last, the return of the human shop assistant. Other stores take note.

I buy it all online, no tills, no doing yourself, that's the best way.

I like self service check outs. They just DON'T work in Booths though. That's reflective of their customer base. Other supermarkets are not the same. Booths customers can't use the self check out without assistance thus defeating the point of them.

Who are these customers, I thought Booths was a fairly expensive shop so would attract middle class customers who may be on holiday because of the stores locations.

I love threads like this because one of the arguments you always see against self service checkouts is "I can't use them, something always goes wrong, they're a huge faff and I always end up having to wait for an assistant to come and help me use it, so I think they should be taken out of all shops".

Meanwhile millions of people manage to use them every day with no issues, and they actively make life better for many. In other words people think that due to their own incompetence something that is hugely beneficial to lots of people should be completely abolished.

Yes. What’s wrong with the option. I see people go to tills or scan whilst I scan as I shop

Far prefer it. Easier and quick. People can keep their preference, as I’d like to

Booths has two markets. The seasonal holiday makers and the local much older population. Local younger people shop in Aldi because they can't afford Booths. Often even the middle class ones.

Booths is keeping its self service tills in two stores. The two in the Lake District which have the most number of seasonal middle class customers on holiday.

Whenever I’ve shopped there it’s been full of middle class, middle aged women.

Many of whom aren’t local. Only used them once and the prices were higher than Waitrose. I live nearish to the one in Chorley. God knows how it stays afloat.

We have one near us and it's usually pretty busy, not in a tourist location, so it'll be mainly local/regular users. I'll be annoyed when they remove the self service tills! I don't go in for my weekly shop, but do go in every 2/3 weeks or so for the thing that other supermarkets don't sell and always use the self service tills, because I don't like queuing - I want to be in and out as quickly as possible and being stuck behind ditherers doesn't appeal at all. I can easily see my visits getting less frequent unless they increase the number of manned tills to stop queueing. The self service tills seem very popular here - lots of people just buying a handful of items and quite an active lunchtime sandwich/crisp/drink trade.
