Domestic flight tomorrow morning at 6.30am (from Gatwick). Do I need to be at the airport an hour before? Or can I check in online and just rock up at the gate, say, half an hour before? This is very last minute and I can't find anything definitive online.

You could, but if there are queues at security you're stuffed. I'd recommend arriving one hour before.

I flew recently from north at 0555 although international. They took ages to board the flight however it was full abd half term. Security etc was an doddle. 0400 - 0700 is the busiest period at LGW and GAL are pretty efficient. Any idea how booked your flight is as that will impact boarding times.

security is pretty quick as you won't be doing passport control, make sure you have everything ready beforehand, I carry my bits all separated out in clear plastic already. The biggest delay at security is if you've accidentally left any liquids in your hand luggage.

the gate will close 35 mins before takeoff. I prefer to have a bit of breathing space and grab a coffee after security.

Sorry also I think go to gate is 1 hr before takeoff, not 100% sure on domestics as generally what I get involved with is international flights

We flew on Tuesday at 8.55 and the plane left without 6 people who never made it from check in to the gate. We checked in online but got there for two hours before and only just got through security in time. Hold up was people trying to carry on bags that were too big. We checked ours in. I would get there two hours before if I were you.

EasyJet call gates (and close gates) very early compared to some airlines. I fly domestically from Gatwick with easyJet often and I'd always want to be clear of security an hour ahead of departure, so aim to get there circa 90 minutes prior with hand luggage only.

PuttingDownRoots · 09/11/2023 20:50

The easyjet gates seem to be the furthest away!

Who are you flying with Op ? EJ bag issues happen at the gate so as long as you are at the gate before it closes you will be ok

InTheRainOnATrain · 09/11/2023 20:52

I’d get there an hour and 15 before. That should give you time to clear security and get to the gate (could be a 15 minute walk), grab a coffee, then boarding will start approx 40 minutes before and officially closes about 30 minutes before.

LIZS · 09/11/2023 20:55

You still need to get through security and boarding closes about half an hour ahead. It can also be a long walk to the gate from security so allow about an hour and a half from arrival at airport to departure.

NotFastButFurious · 09/11/2023 20:56

With hold bags I’d want to be at the airport no less than 90min before departure, and probably 75mim with hand luggage. Check the departures online and see how many flights are due to depart around the same time which might give you a clue as to how busy security will be. The early morning flights tend to board early and close the gates at the time specified to avoid knock on delays throughout the rest of the day. I’m pretty complacent about airport arrival times but an hour seems too tight to me.

meganorks · 09/11/2023 21:03

An hour is definitely koto enough to get through security and to your gate closes. Gatwick is huge and some of the gates are absolutely miles away from security. You need at least 20 mins to get through security and 20 mins to get to the gate and need to be there about 40 mins before scheduled take off. I'd say an hour and a half minimum!

easyJet, and yes it was at the gate, I was there in plenty of time, six people weren't.
