What's the drama on your local NextDoor site?

A 17-year old woman has just joined my local site and started a hashtag in support of her 16-year old friend who's been suspended for violating the rules on respect. There is much talk of his suspension being an issue of human rights infringements and threats to free speech.

The 16-year old who's been suspended is a prolific poster and, unsurprisingly, isn't after recommendations for plumbers or support with a lost cat. He posts utter nonsense and creates completely random feuds with people - he seems to have particular beef with a chap called Geoff for no reason I can discern at all.

As an example of why he's been suspended: In a thread about noisy neighbours, he posted that he'd only have sympathy for the OP if her baby had died.

So there's that.

What's happening on your local ND site right about now?

OP posts:

  1. where is my parcel

  6. no political posts allowed as long as you agree with my political opinion
  7. does anyone know Mary Jackson from park road in 1953
  8. this plumber is a cowboy
  9. I just received a text message, I may be a scam, stay alert
  10. foreworks and pets
  11. I stopped to help someone off the bus today aren’t I a fucking hero
  12. saw Crash in x Road really hope everyone ok (who can give me gossip)
  13. everything signed off kind regards Iris

Honestly it’s so depressing and a real sign of what goes on behind closed doors!

oh there's never anything particularly exciting on ours and most of the members don't seem to have quite worked out how to actually use it! People post things that were clearly meant to be comments on a post as a new post and it hence they don't make any sense!
We have a lot of "lost cats" (it's a cat, it appear well kept and fed and being a cat they tend to roam into other gardens), people looking for cash in hand jobs which inevitably ends up in a lecture about paying tax like everyone else, and a guy who's taken it upon himself to post a photo of various landmarks around the city with the comment "guess where this is / does anyone know where this is" (think the equivalent of a photo of buckingham palace on the London forum!!). The latest recruit seems to be "Fire Stick Frank", i've no idea what his aim is but he posts daily and includes his email address. I think I'd rather Frank didn't show me his fire stick tbh.

@NotFastButFurious

people looking for cash in hand jobs

Read this completely wrong

"Lost" cats doing normal cat things e.g. trying to sneak into someone's house for more food/get out of the rain, lying on garage roofs, lying in middle of pavement, etc

People telling others 'Lost" cat isn't lost and either theirs or someone else local, and to leave the bloody cat alone.

People ranting about ULEZ

Someone constantly advertising car washing services

Anger about roadworks and temporary traffic lights that always start with Thames Water but progress to other utilities. (There are currently loads.)

Cat homing charity posting seemingly random cat untitled photos then seemingly random posts about a cat/pair of cats that need a home.

Dog attacks on dogs then the attacking dogs owner blaming the more placid dog for it being attacked. (Everyone can work out who the stupid owner is )

Questions about smaller cable broadband providers

Stolen cars

Found presumed stolen cars

Conspiracy theories over TFL closing lines on certain days.

Random footage of people stealing from corner shops or from doorsteps. If the thief is in school uniform then people work out the school.

People trying to re-home their cat/dog as the animal charities are full. Others saying don't re-home on here. (Though no posts warning not to take a dog.)

People moaning because their clearly racist post - claiming someone played the race card - or other inappropriate post was removed.

BlackberrySky · 10/11/2023 05:59

Just the usual aggressive bloke who thinks that every form of traffic and parking limitation is "money grabbing council scum" at work.

sashh · 10/11/2023 06:21

Mine is really boring by the sounds of these.

This week's highlights were complaints about fireworks, I live in a multicultural area and Diwali is on Sunday.

And a disabled woman struggling with wheelie bins, she was signposted to the council who will collect and return your bin if you have a disability.

The local church advertising their 'cinema night' and then everyone from the congregation say how much they love that film and that it will be a great evening. I think they have the same 6 films on rotation.

The most amusing thing to me is the ingenious spelling. There is always someone dicustard at something.

ElizaWinter · 10/11/2023 06:31

@Projectme In the end I had to go into the app, go to settings, click on notifications and on every sodding category of different types of notifications, I had to go in and click on the little radio button to move it to grey. Took about 10 minutes to get thru it all!*

Thank you!! I've just done this.

And you're right it took ages! But hopefully no more emails.

Lovecat · 10/11/2023 06:33

-Umpteen "lost" cats
-Ring doorbell footage
-ULEZ outrage
-Slagging Sadiq Khan off, no matter what side of the political spectrum you hail from
-People wanting cooks and cleaners for £5 an hour getting humpy when the minimum wage is pointed out to them
-Moaning about parking tickets
-Moaning about fines for holidays in school time
-Traffic complaints/warnings
-People wanting flats to rent
-People wanting work cash in hand
-A lady who shares pictures of her cat every day just because
-Increasingly racist/antisemitic posts about Gaza 😔
-Huge fights about fireworks - animal lovers/killjoys vs inconsiderate noisemakers/people who only want to celebrate diwali, why are you so racist? The number of people genuinely asking why there were so many fireworks on the 5th was actually quite shocking.
-the council trying to do anything to improve air quality/school safety being framed as a cash grab or a totalitarian assault on their rights (to park/drive like an arsehole, it would appear)
-one guy obsessed with the "great reset" conspiracy who spins everything into the government trying to enslave us all
-people asking for personal recommendations for plumbers/electricians etc having their posts taken over with people offering to do the job themselves, with no discernable qualifications...

AnonyLonnymouse · 10/11/2023 06:57

Someone in a group near to me has a business making signs and puts up multiple posts attempting to convert villages in the surrounding countryside to ‘finger post signs’, which are admittedly quite pretty. However their dedication to this ‘issue’ is somewhat comic. They are also quite against the metric system and modern metric signs, which they feel have no design value. Occasionally someone doesn’t realise that this is business promotion and gets het up because they think the council are paying to replace perfectly good signs.

LadyChilli · 10/11/2023 07:32

I've not been on Next Door for years, just logged on and it's a dreadful site. Jerky and awkward to use.

  • Someone's cat has been coming home with lipstick on its fur
  • Someone selling empty bottles with photographs of people printed on the front and fairy lights inside.
  • Someone asking for advice on carer benefits and being accused of being a scrounger. Most people coming to their defence at least.
  • Someone posting lyrics to songs they have written with "sorry for the long post".
Cactusali · 10/11/2023 07:48

I’m on the same one as the OP. It’s ridiculous the way people pile in. I think we live in a relatively civilised place but the ignorance on display is staggering, plus the inability to spell or use basic grammar. The same handful of people comment moronically, insult each other and make weak attempts at humour.

Reugny · 10/11/2023 09:58

I wrote my post before I logged on this morning.

Today there was a change from lost cats - the change was lost dogs.

People's dogs have been running away from them and unlike cats are actually lost (or stolen).

RainbowZebraWarrior · 10/11/2023 10:11

We have a guy on ours who is always posting spurious jokes. They are usually in the form of "my wife told me this morning that.." He also posts every year that he's just put a load of bread and milk out for the hedgehogs. Other folk comment to say it's not good for the hedgehogs. He ignores it all (obviously just posts ro wind people up, light the blue touch paper and sit back) He then gets temporary bans for being an annoying arse. Comes back, calls everyone a load of miserable farts / can't say anything these days / PC gone mad etc. Sometimes others start "Bring back lovely X, he makes us laugh" threads. Total prick.

We also get the "council are a bunch of bastanrds" posts. Anyone who disagrees is "In the councils pocket / Arse licker"

It does seem to be the preferred form of socials for some very small minded folk.

LTB! 😁

TheDogsMother · 10/11/2023 10:37

Anyone know a locksmith, painter, DIY person or fridge repairs. Anyone getting rid of any glamorous clothes in a size 14. Strange cat in the garden and does anyone have space in their garden pond for some more goldfish. No ranting about dog shit this week though.

caringcarer · 10/11/2023 11:10

On mine it's mostly cats going missing or someone recommended a trade. Oh just thought 2 bikes have recently been stolen.

vernatheraven · 10/11/2023 11:31

Mostly people naming and shaming people for not picking up their dogs poo.

RidingMyBike · 10/11/2023 11:32

Oh crikey I'm on the same one as OP. Unless there are more of them with 16yo posting strange things, getting banned, then 17yo friend wading in to campaign to 'free' them.

Bizarre number of posts where people assume everyone is on ND so can track down post, identify incorrectly parked car, who has set off the fireworks.

I preferred the thing that existed before it was bought out by ND? Can't remember the name but it seemed a little more civilised.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 10/11/2023 11:34

Thursa · 10/11/2023 01:35

“Did anyone hear what sounded like gun shots last night?”

”My dog/cat/chicken is missing”

”Porch pirates”. This one is going to be daily over the next weeks.

We must be neighbours.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 10/11/2023 11:46

The more of all these posts I'm reading about I'm wondering if actually Next Door and FBSpotted>insert your locality < are actually doing a public service. It's just mental Grin

Lol you described mine perfectly

Stickthatupyourdojo · 10/11/2023 11:52

Mine has lots of men writing "the latest generation", "national service" and "snowflakes" on all and sundry. They get confused in their rage so often just put it as their own comment and not against whatever thing has got them all bothered.

One even got enraged when I posted a comment mentioning how good the new pet shop near me was, I said it was great to have somewhere in walking distance you could take your dog to. The silly sod didn't realise it isn't just your road that shows in the feed on next door so went on a long rant at me about how X shop was better and I should support existing local businesses. That's a chain, and also the other side of town and no where near me Grin

There's some good stuff too - people offering plants or materials for free, posting about local events or initiatives which is why I've not deleted it.

SquashPenguin · 10/11/2023 11:56

Endless amounts of MLM posting. No one ever responds to any of it. It’s always FM or Avon. They aren’t taking the hint. It’s always “IVE GOT A HUGE SALE ON!, but no one wants their shitty perfume half price either.

CardamomGarden · 10/11/2023 11:59

Can’t stand ND. All the hair-trigger fury you get on any SM platform, including this one, but without much in the way of entertainment to redeem the experience. Wit, insight or just useful info was scarce.

I finally put in the ludicrous effort needed to unsubscribe after a few incidents. One was a bitter and depressing argument over whether it was ok or not to allow dogs to piss on gravestones, eliciting the usual point-scoring accusations of privilege. The final straw was finding that there was no way whatsoever to report to ND that people are using the site to offer animals for adoption / sale. I admire the posters who patiently respond to every thread on that subject with helpful info about local animal rescues, but I couldn’t take the deluge of idiots who see no problem with this any longer and thinking about the poor animals involved. Too depressing and I was powerless to do anything.

The odd post does still come through and the last one I noticed was something like ‘Black man spotted near my house’ - says it all about a large number of users.

BlackberrySky · 10/11/2023 12:59

There is a teenage boy walking down a road he doesn't live on. That apparently makes him a wrong'un who should have his photo posted on Nextdoor.....

RainbowZebraWarrior · 10/11/2023 13:02

Oh, I've just remembered, a few weeks ago someone posted ring camera footage of a man taking a dog for a walk and doing a poo on the pavement (the man, not the dog!)
