What's the drama on your local NextDoor site?

A 17-year old woman has just joined my local site and started a hashtag in support of her 16-year old friend who's been suspended for violating the rules on respect. There is much talk of his suspension being an issue of human rights infringements and threats to free speech.

The 16-year old who's been suspended is a prolific poster and, unsurprisingly, isn't after recommendations for plumbers or support with a lost cat. He posts utter nonsense and creates completely random feuds with people - he seems to have particular beef with a chap called Geoff for no reason I can discern at all.

As an example of why he's been suspended: In a thread about noisy neighbours, he posted that he'd only have sympathy for the OP if her baby had died.

So there's that.

What's happening on your local ND site right about now?

OP posts:

Oh I forgot - endless photos of parcels in letter boxes and front doors asking if anyone recognises where their parcel might be....

purplecorkheart · 09/11/2023 15:03

Don't have Next Door here but I think we are now on six local facebook pages. There was one but some people fell out with the moderators of the page so set up their own. Some of these people fell out with each other and set up page three and four. A 6th one started recently but it seems to be a group of people making veiled nasty comments about other people on the local pages.

BoohooWoohoo · 09/11/2023 15:06

I have unsubscribed but there was a man who posted (what he presumably thought ) multiple daily memes and jokes. He'd get annoyed that nobody was liking or interacting with them.

GoodnightJude1 · 09/11/2023 15:10

Dog poo, missing cats and endless ring door bell footage of ‘dodgy looking men’

SM4713 · 09/11/2023 15:15

A man with a body building physique asking for foreign language lessons from young, slim females, in exchange for a body massage! 🙄

A woman wanting a man and van service. Collect things from address A, then travel 30mins to another location to collect more stuff, then a further hour away to delivery it all. For free of course!

Missing cats or random cats in their gardens

Some bought something from market place, but doesn't drive and can't collect it- can someone on nextdoor collect it for her- again, for free!

Oganesson118 · 09/11/2023 15:37

Lots of lost cats, people needing DIY done, someone posting "please click on this link so I can get my reward from Temu" 5 times a day and a relentless UW person who swears blind that UW isn't an MLM.

Oh and a very random noise that blights our part of the world - there's this weird hum at night sometimes and no bugger knows what it is.

MaliciaKeys · 09/11/2023 15:44

The 20mph speed limit is currently a hot topic (Wales), dodgy looking men knocking on doors, dog shit not being picked up on the coastal path - that's a genuine grievance - and it's useful for finding local plumbers, electricians and joiners.

Aaron95 · 09/11/2023 15:46

In no particular order, people moaning about dog poo, potholes, the council fireworks, electric scooters and youths up to no good.

Ezzee · 09/11/2023 17:04

VeridicalVagabond · 09/11/2023 13:29

I'm in Wales so it's all arguing about the 20mph speed limit and slagging off Mark Drakeford

Ours too!
Plus the conspiracy theorist who is an absolute knob who has repeatedly been banned but always comes back, although quite amazing when challanged, the one that posts photos of hedgehogs except said hedgehogs are very rarely in the photos, so photos of nearly hedgehogs and a woman who is clearly a MLM member who posts about her fantastic job opportunities 😏

Fifireee · 09/11/2023 20:19

My Next Door site was insane. Like Facebook on steroids. People post picture from their ring cameras of people just walking by demanding to know if anyone knows them. Then a woman got told off by about 800 people because her dog got bitten by a fox which came into her house. She got accused of cruelty to foxes. Completely mad people. So I left. It made me think I should move away from the area because everyone was as mad as a box of frogs.

clarebear111 · 09/11/2023 20:25

Ours is about the horrific impact low traffic neighbourhoods have had locally. It’s honestly heartbreaking to read accounts from desperate local businesses and to see the footage of the congestion. Without wanting to state the obvious, people live on boundary roads too.

MainlyOnThePlain · 09/11/2023 20:43

Daily postings about a cat that went missing a year ago (actually heartbreaking)
Body Shop 'amazing opportunities'
Will the profligate/useless council house refugees in a hotel in the next town?
When will the profligate/useless council build a bypass?
Can someone do this very specific carpentry job for my elderly mother for £2.50
Is this your porch?
Want to earn £££ as an AirBNB cleaner?
What was that in the sky last night? (A: a govt drone/a UFO/the air ambulance/we'll never know because the useless/profligate council hide all information from us the tax payers, etc)

I only keep subscribing in case there's some good gossip.

Cherrysoup · 09/11/2023 20:49

There are always lots of ‘Anyone know these little charmers’ and some stills from a ring doorbell of youths who have broken in somewhere.

This week, there were complaints re the 3 sets of roadworks within a mile of each other on one street. It was a bloody pita. I just do a square around it to avoid it.

exerciseviligance · 09/11/2023 21:11

Still people moaning about the fireworks and a woman desperate for advice about how to get her tongue bar off ready for surgery in the morning (it's stuck)

PianPianPiano · 09/11/2023 21:34

Bins. So many posts about fucking bins (local Fb groups too). Local council is changing the bin collection and people have lost their minds.

We had an entertaining period where someone posted jokes, some people complained and said they didn't want jokes. He then got told off by admin for posting jokes. So flounced. But kept coming back to tell people he'd flounced because of his jokes. Then people started posting how they were going to flounce too in support. That went on for weeks and was quite amusing.

We also get people who clearly think it's "their" site for just them and their friends and get annoyed about any or all of the following: adverts; local politics; national politics; people selling things; jokes (see above). Ranting posts addressed to "admin" about how they could improve the site if they'd just stop these things...

Oh, my other favourites are posts like "I've got a new job and I'm too busy to read all the posts on here now so I'm going to leave" or "please unsubscribe me from this".

Projectme · 09/11/2023 21:49

christmassausages · 09/11/2023 11:29

I have all the multitude of emails it sends every single day going to a junk folder. I have no idea how to stop them. I've followed the instruction on unsubscribing but still they come. So, in short, I have no idea what is happening on my nextdoor site and just wish I had never signed I to it in tge first place.

I clicked the unsubscribe link in one of the emails and thought 'right, that's sorted'.

Sadly not.

In the end I had to go into the app, go to settings, click on notifications and on every sodding category of different types of notifications*, I had to go in and click on the little radio button to move it to grey. Took about 10 minutes to get thru it all!

It worked mind.

  • categories such as events, friend notifications, non friend notifications, events set up by neighbours, tagged links, tagged by neighbours, tagged by non neighbours, tagged by the middle aged man at no.42 whilst his wife is out, tagged by Magda's cat who's got a penchant for stealing the cat scarers....that kind of minutiae detail!!! Good grief, I wish I'd never joined up!

I wonder if you live in the same place as me!

EtiennePalmiere · 09/11/2023 23:07

😂 I love these things, people are crazy

TheDutchHouse · 09/11/2023 23:18

Cats ... Cats ... Cats ... if I see one more pic of a healthy kitty having their mugshot posted because they have been in someone's garden for a nano second so they be lost or a stray I will scream !!!

SpringingJoy · 09/11/2023 23:23

Dodgy looking people with Irish accents and a sob story, knocking doors selling tat, and possibly trying to spot houses worth burgling. So be aware, don't open the door, report etc.

It's amusing reading the posts where people are very carefully avoiding using the word 'travellers' when that's blatantly who they mean, just to avoid being labelled a bigot/racist.

Isometimeswonder · 09/11/2023 23:34

Bluevelvetsofa · 09/11/2023 13:19

The floods.
Is the road open?
Can I get from A to B?
Is the tip open because the roads are closed?
Why are there roadworks on every route out of the village?

And which bin it is this week.

Bbq1 · 09/11/2023 23:41

On my local one it's mostly people complaining about dog poo and fireworks. I always feel sad for the amount of missing cats. I don't have fb but look at ND occasionally. Actually had sone decent tradesmen from it.

Thursa · 10/11/2023 01:35

“Did anyone hear what sounded like gun shots last night?”

”My dog/cat/chicken is missing”

”Porch pirates”. This one is going to be daily over the next weeks.

asleep · 10/11/2023 03:09

Mine is so bizarre. There's a guy who posts photos of his food every day. I think he's mistaken it for instagram.

Also people who post their life stories and get into bun fights regularly.

My group is quite heartwarming, often, in Toronto. For example, the last year or so an older woman joined our neighbourhood group though she lives many hours away. Her adult son has schizophrenia, had hopped on a train, and was now living on the streets locally to us. She rallied the neighbours so that an eye was kept on him. People would give him food, changes of clothes, a winter coat, a hot drink, $20 here or there, very regularly. Eventually, with the help of our local MP, she managed to get him sectioned and brought home to receive proper care. But she credits the group with keeping her son in decent physical health through a tough winter.

The kindness of strangers!!
