Hi Everyone,

Could I please have a handhold?
My dad is having a major heart operation today. I’m trying to keep myself busy and distracted but I can’t help but worry.

I'm sure some of you may have been through something similar.

Thank you ❤️

Hoping it all goes well, @Piglet5583 The waiting is so very stressful. Thinking of you xx

Piglet5583 · 09/11/2023 09:55

@Zimunya thank you so much. It’s much appreciated xx

Thinking of you OP, been through similar with my dad and the waiting around is agony. I hope everything goes well 💐

flaxentoad · 09/11/2023 09:59

I am sorry you are so worried, but it's totally understandable, of course you would be.

Heart surgery has great success rates and your father wouldn't be going for this operation if the medics weren't sure it will help him. They do so much pre-assessment stuff just for this reason.

When will your father be out of surgery, do you know?

We're here for you.

It's really difficult to concentrate on anything when you feel like this, I know, but we're here to hold your hand.

Spirallingdownwards · 09/11/2023 10:00

hugs all round

Piglet5583 · 09/11/2023 10:03

@VeridicalVagabond thank you. Hope your dad is ok now. The waiting around is awful and it’s quite a long op too xx

@flaxentoad thank you.
He’s not in surgery yet. He’s been prepped and is second on the list so he should hopefully go down about lunchtime. The surgery should take around 5 hours. I think it’s going to be a very long day!

Thinking of you & your dad OP. I had a very long cancer surgery (8 hours apparently!) & I know how worried my family were. The waiting for the call is hard. We’re all here to distract you as much as you need!

Wheeeeee · 09/11/2023 10:11

You may already know this but in case it helps later, often the time they give is how long the surgeon will be working, and doesn't account for bringing them round etc afterwards. So if you haven't heard anything after 5 hours it doesn't automatically mean something is wrong!

Piglet5583 · 09/11/2023 10:15

@Kitchendisco1 I can imagine how worrying it was for them. I really hope you’re on the road to recovery and feeling much better now 🙏

It is hard, currently willing the time away!

Doesn't help this operation has been
cancelled once already (right at the last minute when he was gowned up, shaved etc) so that’s in the back of mind too.

Best wishes from me to you and your dad 🥰

Piglet5583 · 09/11/2023 10:23

@Wheeeeee that's helpful to remember. Any logic I have has completely gone out of the window!

Have a handhold from me Flowers. My Dad had major heart surgery a long time ago and I remember well waiting to hear news about how it went. Best wishes to you

Yes, that's a very long day to be so anxious.

I remember when my sister was hit by a bus as a pedestrian (she was drunk). She was in a coma and not expected to live. She went straight into surgery for many hours. Didn't think she'd make it. She came through the surgery but was in a coma for weeks. I understand that hanging around. I couldn't concentrate. I work freelance and hardly earned any money and tried housework and dropped my mobile into the toilet. I just couldn't concentrate. My mobile was going off all the time with updates. My sister is pretty good now, she has a brain injury and will never work again, but she still has her personality and I can hardly believe we still have her. She was in rough shape before the accident and not someone who would have been put forward for an operation under normal circumstances, I don't think.

Sorry, going on about myself.

I suppose what I am trying to say is that surgeons are amazing and I am sure you father will do well as he has been properly prepped for this operation and deemed fit to have the surgery, so this is all positive.

As a pp said, we are here for you. Just tell us what you need. Ideas for distraction? A chat? Whatever you need. You must be emotionally exhausted, especially with the operation being cancelled at the last minute before.

Pinkpinkpink15 · 09/11/2023 11:21

Where are you? (Home/hospital/work)

I'll be thinking of you & your Dad.

waiting is hell on earth!

but what I wouldn't give to be waiting. My Dad died of a massive heart attack So try to concentrate on your Dad having a wonderful opportunity & the hospital wouldn't be doing it if he didn't have a good chance of success!!!

Been through this twice with my Dad, so I know what you're going through. Both times a success though! The second time it took hours longer than planned but this doesn't necessarily mean something bad will happen. Fingers crossed for your family ❤️

LightSpeeds · 09/11/2023 12:12

Thinking of you and your dad 💕

MeinKraft · 09/11/2023 12:16

Hand holding OP. Fresh air helps. If you can get to the coast, go sit by the beach and stare at the sea Flowers

flaxentoad · 09/11/2023 12:48

Visualise everything going well. Picture your father coming round and picture him smiling at you for the first time since the op. Picture his health problem clearing up and him feeling better than he did before. This will help calm you.

Hang in there! You can do this.

flaxentoad · 09/11/2023 15:15

Still thinking about you OP. I have to go and do something now, but you and your father are in my thoughts. X

flaxentoad · 10/11/2023 06:39

I hope everything went well yesterday and that your father is on the road to recovery. X

It’s a relief to see it’s not just me. I’m terrified and I’ve never been worried about the wind. I’m in Scotland and my whole house sounds like it’s creaking and about the blow away. I can’t wait for this night to be over 🙄
