Anyone here raised by conspiracy theorists?

Hi, have posted similar recently but wanted a different take on things.

Interested in experiences as we have a situation in our family.....my sister's partner has fallen down the rabbit hole of conspiracy theories. World economic Forum doomsday stuff, flat earth, lizard royal family, chem trails. Unfortunately he has lost a lot of contact with family and friends due to the aggressive and relentless way he forces his theories on people. My sister is indulging him, he was always very manipulative and controlling and she has started to spout some (not all) of the same rubbish. I worry about my niece.....they hardly socialise with anyone, the partner has quit his job and plans to sponge off my sister while he continues with his 'research'.

My niece is due to start school next year and he is planning on homeschooling her. I'm really worried about the effect on her education, social skills etc. This is not a criticism on homeschooling, more on him as a competent educator. I know there is a large homeschooling community where they live, but he won't mix with mere 'sheeple'. Or if he does he'll drive them nuts spouting his drivvle!

Has anyone had an upbringing like this and come out the other side? Or has it had a major impact. I think I'm looking for some hope my niece will be OK. Tia

He sounds like he needs a mental health assessment.

RichTea63 · 09/11/2023 09:47

@readingwalker quite. When this was all starting my sister encouraged him to see the GP due to his anxiety......he wouldn't as he thought the GP would be in liaison with the government...who at the time were monitoring his movements. Why on earth he thinks he's significant enough for the government to monitor I have no idea! Definitely delusions of grandeur and paranoia feeding into all this. I'm so frustrated that my sister is indulging his fantasies as it is really not helping, but I think she's so terrified of the family unit breaking down.

'he wouldn't as he thought the GP would be in liaison with the government...who at the time were monitoring his movements.' This is a mental illness concern, for sure. We had a family member who was diagnosed after she had the same beliefs and she had a period on medication to level back to reality. He sounds like he is losing touch with reality (quitting work would be a good sign of this in his current situation, not that it is that for everyone!) and is finding ample opportunities to fuel his thinking. I would be concerned about the impact on his daughter too, hopefully as she gets older she will question his views but currently she is probably just sponging it in like children do. Good luck OP

It is a mental health concern but from experience of speaking to a Dr about a family member for the exact same reasons they won't do anything unless the individual engages because they're not a risk to themselves or others.

There are a lot of online resources about how to support/avoid/engage/disengage with these people I'll see if I can find some for you. I've cut off my family member because my own mental health was suffering.

When they say they don't like people monitoring them I always used to remind them they have a smart phone and all the tracking facilities for that turned on...

It could be argued he could be a risk to others if he is isolating his child because of it, and it's impacting the child's life.

It could but that's a chronic issue not a medical emergency. Equally, parental choice.

Yes, more the kind of intervention child services would do than a mental health crisis team. Parental choice can be intervened with if it's damaging to a child.

Sorry your niece is in this position. I would try and maintain contact purely for her sake.

@RichTea63

I went to normal schools, etc but i was influenced by the show x-files, La femme nikita, Spooks, the magazines X-factor, different conspiracy books and websites.

For me hypothetically if i were to guess i was a person of interest, i would try to see and or see when actual people behave odd, or if little details dont add up with people or news paper articles on different stories, or if google street view is wiped between a set period of dates (if you know there was different data) or you run the number plates of some cars of people you know and the information is restricted ect, thats how i would consider and build my theories from there as at least your basing your facts and analysis on reality rather than just guessing, although you would still be guessing at an overall conclusion.
