Dehumidifier to help drying clothes

53 replies

VelvetVoice · 08/11/2023 19:09

Does it really work?

I don't have a humidity problem and just want my clothes dry quicker (no tumble dryer)

I'm looking at this one.

Wondering if there are cheaper / better options out there.

I have a Meaco Junior dessicant model that I bought after looking at Which reviews. It has a setting to dry washing and switches itself off when the washing is dry. It's absolutely brilliant. No more damp washing and musty smells, and it stops the room getting damp and mouldy.

TinTinCheeseHat · 08/11/2023 20:28

They are fab for drying clothes, but killed off all my houseplants!

Thanks, @HappierTimesAhead! That's really good to know.

TheseLegsDefinitelyUsedToBeLonger · 08/11/2023 20:31

Dehumidifiers are brilliant. That is all. Very pleased with our three 😁we are inordinately happy with them, can’t believe it took til last year to discover them! 😂

MrsQTip · 08/11/2023 20:40

Meaco - it’s THE best thing I have ever bought it’s a total game changer I have the egg shaped white and green one. It’s an amazing machine and you can put a HEPA filter in it which lasts ages and good for if you have allergies .

Same here - it’s sad, but the highlight of my day is emptying the tank 🤣

LittleMooli · 08/11/2023 20:41

Even in a big room it helps, pop it near the clothes. I get loads of water in mine.

MrsQTip · 08/11/2023 20:45

@VelvetVoice
when I have a shower and it’s been so wet outside no point in opening windows so the Meaco goes in shower room, shows 99% humidity in the room and as it’s quite warm it gets the humidity down to 50% in two hours without a trace of water anywhere on the tile, windows and the towels are dry, it works best in warm conditions I think it has a freeze mode about 12 degrees when a little red light with an ice symbol appears so they don’t work quite as well when the house is cold but it’s lovely having a dry and warm shower room and they are notoriously bad for getting mouldy. It dries cotton bedding jeans and towels overnight as well. So worth buying you won’t regret it

GreyhpundGirl · 08/11/2023 20:53

Yes, I got mine to dry cloth nappies thet are dense so take ages to dry. My Meaco 12L did the trick. It's much better than in front of a radiator as moisture isn't getting into the house.

Autumntide · 08/11/2023 20:53

I’ve got a 20l Meaco. It is quite heavy so you wouldn’t want to carry it up and down stairs very often, but it is on rollers so easy to move about the ground floor.

It has a vent on the top that moves so it blows dry air onto your damp clothes. I put it right next to the airer. Thick seams on jeans, heavy jumpers or thick sweatshirts take longer than 8hrs to dry, but the majority of things are dry overnight. The big advantage to it is that it removes the moisture from the air so windows aren’t misty, walls don’t get damp, no mouldy walls or window seals. The air doesn’t feel damp and dry air is warmer.

I dry outside as much as possible and I do have a condenser tumble dryer which I still use if I want things dried quickly or the airer is already full, but the Meaco is a really useful addition that gives me more options on a rainy day.

@MrsQTip You and me both! 😂There’s lots of oohing and aahing here too! 😁

MrsQTip · 08/11/2023 21:08

@TheseLegsDefinitelyUsedToBeLonger
all that water is coming from somewhere ! Even if you aren’t drying laundry and let’s face it the rains have been incessant for weeks I’m sure the air is full of water I have noticed the house heats better too when the air is dryer. They’re just magnificent ! Worth every penny

I take the houseplants out of the room I'm drying in, I thought it might be a bit brutal for them!

MrsQTip · 08/11/2023 21:27

@userxx
poor plants ! Also my cat doesn’t like being in the room when it’s on I think it dries his nose out !

You've given me an idea, I could dump the pup in the drying room after a wet walk. Genius!

MrsQTip · 08/11/2023 22:20

@userxx
it just might work 🤔

Faithalways · 08/11/2023 22:33

I also finally got Meaco since finding out about it last year. Wish I got it sooner, it dries my clothes overnight. Also comes with 5 year warranty, only dehumidifier I've can across with this length of warranty.

EnfysPreseli · 08/11/2023 22:54

We have an ElectriQ 12L dehumidifier with a laundry setting and it's really good. I do usually use a combination of the other settings though. One thing to remember is that 10L, 20L etc doesn't refer to the capacity of the tank; but to the rate at which the machine extracts moisture from the air. So a 20L dehumidifier is more efficient than a 12L. Personally I think a 12L model is the lowest you should go for drying laundry, if you can afford it.

Borborygmus · 09/11/2023 12:09

VelvetVoice · 08/11/2023 19:30

@Catmummyof2 silly question but do I need to put the dehumidifier near the clothes, for example in between two clothes airers?

I position the dehumidifier so that it wafts warm air over the damp washing, and I also try to rotate the airer periodically. It seems to be more efficient that way and takes less time to get everything dry, typically around 4 hours for me.

Slav80 · 09/11/2023 19:18

Ordered one today, arriving tomorrow, thanks for the good tips, all, can't wait! We live in a very old Victorian semi and damp has always been an issue, hopefully with this it will improve.

VelvetVoice · 09/11/2023 19:59

Ordered a Meaco 12L last night, couldn't find a bigger one. Can't wait for it to arrive.

I think you’ll be impressed 👍

HappierTimesAhead · 10/11/2023 08:16

I hung up some washing last night. Dehumidifier on overnight, no heating on apart from 2 hours this morning. The clothes are dry! I would hate to do door to door sales but I think I could sell these! 😂

lljkk · 10/11/2023 08:23

DS has one. I hate it. Noisy. Takes over the room it's in. He was using it to dry clothes last summer on very hot summer days. He has a clothes line but couldn't be bothered to buy clothes pegs. Awkward to empty the water (easy to forget to empty the water).
