MRI in Pregnancy

Hi,

I am due to have a brain MRI performed in a few weeks at which point I will be 15 weeks +6 days pregnant. Can anyone advise if this is safe? I have looked it up online and it says its fine, but being asked to sign a waiver and just want to double check first if anyone has experience of it? I would not be taking the contrast dye.

Thanks

Yes @Laura22023 it is safe, were you pregnant when the referral was made? The Radiographers may make some adjustments to the scan protocol so you do need to make sure that you tell them you are pregnant. They will ask you to complete a safety questionnaire and possibly a consent form to show that the procedure has been properly explained to you, it shouldn’t be a waiver for you to accept responsibility. When you say you won’t be having contrast, I assume that has already been discussed and explained to you, rather than you just deciding, as it is usually given to show up blood vessels, so the clinicians will need to make sure it is worthwhile you having a non contrast scan, otherwise they may deem it better to wait until you have given birth. Hope all goes well xx

I had one when I was about 34 weeks pregnant , also without the dye. All was fine, albeit I panicked when they started and created a bit of a scene 😀

We actually run mris on pregnant women to see the foetus in more detail sometimes. Completely safe. They are horrific to look at though so don't google pregnant mri images as the baby looks different to an ultrasound 😂
