....Can you take a suit bag (half size so traditional suit bag) on as a hand luggage item? Thanks

Yes that would be fine, people take all sorts.

If the dimensions of your half suit bag fit the specified carry on dimensions then you can. If they don’t then technically you can’t but you may get away with it anyway
