What is this - mouse, rat?

I left one of DDs bottles in the car overnight. Just went in now and saw the teat seems to have been gnawed? Feel slightly sick 🤢 what to do about mice/rats??

What is this - mouse, rat?

I would start with checking the car for any holes. Then I would get a snap trap and put chocolate spread or peanut butter on and leave in the car when you go to bed. It could be rat, mouse. Squirrels also have big teeth but more unlikely to get in

Consideratestone · 07/11/2023 09:36

Thanks - horrible thought. I’ll get some traps.

I would personally give the car a wipe down with antibacterial wipes just incase of wee on the surfaces.
Definitely check for holes or have a garage look for you.
Hopefully it's a one time thing and they never come back and are not living in the car.

In a car? Jeez ...

But mouse or rat - difficult to tell unless you can see teeth marks.

I'd definitely be putting a trap in the footwell to see if you can catch anything. Be sure to remove it before using the car!

ErrolTheDragon · 07/11/2023 09:54

Urgh.
Obviously make sure there's absolutely no food left in the car.

OlderandwiserMaybe · 07/11/2023 09:55

You can't tell really from just looking at chew marks. Have you found any droppings in the car?? Rat droppings are much bigger than mouse droppings.

Deffo clean out the car remove any food residues and put down a trap.

Good Luck.

Slugs and snails often eat soft plastic

Rosiem2808 · 07/11/2023 09:58

Yes, I bet it's a slug

Oganesson118 · 07/11/2023 09:59

There'd be trails all over if it was a slug though?

Does your DD have any teeth cutting through? When my DC was 5 months old they had a tooth come through and created a similar break in the teat.

Saladgoatcheese · 07/11/2023 10:01

Aww, don’t kill it OP.

Humane traps work just as well and then you can let the little creature out in the woods.

DreamsAreFading · 07/11/2023 10:04

Oh scrap what I said about your baby’s teeth, with a closer look at the photo I can see it’s not just a tear but a hole.

AbbeyGailsParty · 07/11/2023 10:18

Mice can get in through a hole the diameter of a regular pencil. It’s worth checking if there are any small holes and if they can’t be filled permanently stuff them with wire wool. Mice won’t chew through that due to the texture. You can add drops of peppermint oil too, that deters them.
Fill holes, lay traps. Keep setting traps until none are caught. Wipe over all the car with anti bac spray or use white vinegar on a cloth.

Consideratestone · 07/11/2023 11:17

Thanks - didn’t know that about the peppermint.

It definitely isn’t DD; she’s not even 4 months.

Have a good look for droppings.
They should give you a clue.

Do check your car carefully, a friends DH had a nasty accident after a mouse chewed through cables in his car.

Itsnotchristmasyet · 07/11/2023 12:26

My ex swore he had a mouse/rat living in his car and I didn’t believe him as I said there would be more droppings/teeth marks but he was right and it was coming up through the engine somehow we think.

I also had a rat and I had to set up a camera because there were loads of droppings and teeth marks in my shed but there was no way one could get in or out.
The camera caught the biggest rat going through a hole which was an inch wide maximum, I was shocked.

The best thing to do is not leave any food or crumbs in the car at all (difficult with a toddler).
