I love going to my yoga classes. They help me regulate my emotions and improve my self esteem.

What's yours?

Great thread. I am bored this evening and thinking I need a new hobby
I do yoga regularly and would love to teach.
I'd like to try a craft but can't sew/knit/ crochet as am cack handed.
I used to love drawing at school but probably rubbish at it now.
I like jigsaws and did several in lockdown

Even if you are rubbish at drawing you should do it again if you'll enjoy it. Smile We put too much stress on having to be good at something when the enjoyment part should be the main thing.

If it's something you used to do I bet it'll all come back to you before you know it.

I went to my first Pilates class in ages tonight. The instructor was happy that my mobility was still good even if it wasn't where I was at one point. Smile

Same applies to knitting and crochet. It's a matter of getting used to it and developing muscle memory.

It stinks that we feel like we have to be good at something from the outset, or else we're not allowed to do it, and will be judged. Last time I encountered that attitude from anyone was my dirtbag phys ed teacher in the 70s! When it comes to learning a craft, nobody's judging, everyone doing it has been through the same process, and the knitting teachers I know are all about encouraging learners and wanting them to enjoy themselves.

Choral singing and anxiety.

Shit, are you me? 😂

GarlicGrace · 09/11/2023 01:48

Mumsnet 😂

Two years ago, I decided I needed a new hobby and chose jewellery making - not workbench stuff, just beads & wires. It soon became clear that my real hobby is buying gemstones 😳 Now the proud owner of thousands of tiny bits of expensive rock I can't afford, I'm buckling down to the fact that I have to get good enough at this to sell a few pieces, otherwise that huge cost is well and truly sunk!

More readily, I randomly pursue arcane topics on the internet until I know as much as a first-year undergraduate. And binge-watch fashionably dystopian movies, sci-fi and procedural crime series.

I write. Used to get paid for it, now I just write because I do. Again, random.

Come to think of it, my hobby is being random ... and Mumsnet.

There are some fascinating people on this thread!

nokidshere · 09/11/2023 02:02

I bake cakes! Make chocolates, cook, Paint, draw, quiz, digital art, read, audio books & podcasts, read, sew - whilst I absolutely love the reactions I get from producing something amazing (and I do amaze even myself at times (thinking of a recent cake)) it's the 'doing it' that I get pleasure from not the outcome.

I have sold some of my art though, I'm always amazed that someone would want something I have painted on their walls especially when I don't display it myself.

Play in a bit orchestra and quartet, Ice hockey, basketball, teaching whitewater canoeing and hill running. Also singing in baroque person choir and knitting. Odd mix.

Do you gift a lot of the cakes? I can imagine it's havoc on the waistline otherwise!

nokidshere · 09/11/2023 09:25

@39and I gift all of them. My family aren't particularly cake lovers so rarely make them for home. I do them for friends/family or send them to the school cake sale. Sometimes I make to order and other times people just get a random cake that I wanted to try out. I never sell them or make for payment.

I’d never heard of diamond painting until this thread.

Mine:
Yoga
swimming
Hiking
Reading
Going to gigs (this one is expensive as often involves travel)

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 09/11/2023 09:47

I have a young baby so I don’t have as much time for hobbies as I used to. I read as much as I can. I also go on a lot of walks, I have a dog so I don’t really have any choice about this, but I do enjoy it if the weather’s nice.

I used to go to yoga, swimming, dance classes and I’ve sung in a choir for most of my life. I don’t do any of that anymore but hopefully I’ll get back into it one day.
