What age would you let you DC go to the corner shop alone?

We have a mini supermarket about 3-mins walk up the road. No roads to cross. What age would you let them go alone with a short shopping list?

Ours can walk home alone from yr 4 so 8 ish? We did it (70's child) from 4 or 5.

Simplepink · 05/11/2023 12:36

With no roads to cross 8 depending on the child.

Mine started going together at 11 and 9 but this was involving crossing roads and a bit further away. If there was no roads and 3 mins away I would be fine with the 9 year old going alone.

I would say 8 or 9. I let dc walk to our local shop when they were 11 but that involved crossing a road.

7 or 8

Manadou · 05/11/2023 12:38

My mum used to send me age 7 to get her fags. Ten Woodbines. Different times, of course! No roads to cross.

NuffSaidSam · 05/11/2023 12:38

About 8.

A little younger/older depending on the child and the area.

tarheelbaby · 05/11/2023 12:38

When your DC feels comfortable.
Our corner shop is meters away with one easy road to cross but my DDs didn't want to go alone because they were not comfortable interacting with the (kindly, local, friendly) shopkeepers!

PuttingDownRoots · 05/11/2023 12:39

We moved when ours were 8&9 and they started doing that pretty much straight away together (and elder one alone). Then younger one did it alone at 9.

Caravaggiouch · 05/11/2023 12:40

About 8 in the situation you describe.

Thanks! He is 9 so think I will start letting him run some errands.
