I volunteer at a community library and am thinking of starting a childrens book group......has anyone else done this or run one? Do your kids attend one and what do they like or don't like about it? Age range abou. 8 - 11. All tips and help welcome!

When would you be doing it?

8 year olds read very different books to 11 year olds

Probably on a Saturday

You could certainly get some non sporty kids (often sports clubs on Saturday am) that are free then.

but there is a gulf between an 8 year old and an 11 year old

Often parties at those ages on a Saturday. So could have very sporadic attendance, which isn’t great for a book club

Well it could be a late afternoon thing....after school

There is always going to be a time which some kids aren’t going to be able to make. Just choose a time which works for you and see how it goes. Good luck.

Well some 8 year olds are reading books aimed at older children and some 11 year olds are reading books more for younger children. You could easily choose books suitable for an average child at both ends of the age range and children can join if they are happy with these books.

My kids, age 9 and 10 go to one on a Wednesday afternoon for half an hour before the library closing time. The children in the group would be 8 to 12.

There's been a real mix of books - some classics, some modern, some comic books. My 10 yo is a big reader has managed all the books fine. My 9yo isn't such a big reader so we've had to read some of them to him. It's been great for getting them out of their comfort zone and trying new genres.
