Google Doc missing

Isiteverevenreallyover · 04/11/2023 10:13

I kept a document on my Google docs. It was one document that I used as a kind of journal that I would type into or read over every few months. It's gone. Nobody else has access to it and I'm the author.

I have found bits and pieces from it, random paragraphs isolated in 'untitled documents' loose in My Drive but cannot find the main document.

This document had massive sentimental value to me. Google said I'd run out of space so I deleted loads of clutter and even paid for more space but I still can't find my document.

Any ideas?

That’s odd

id be thinking of sync issue/overwrite

They are a but maddening for support but may be your best bet

Have you looked in the bin?

plumtreebroke · 04/11/2023 10:48

Sounds like its lost its pointers, documents aren't necessarily all in one place in memory so the end of one bit points to the start of the next bit. An expert might be able to track it all down if that is what's happened, but it might be expensive. Don't do anything like defragmentation or saving other stuff or parts may get over written if it still exists.

smooththecat · 04/11/2023 11:06

From what op said, It’s stored in the cloud rather than on her local drive. If op didn’t purposefully erase the bin the deleted items will still be in there as it’s only deleted permanently after a certain amount of time.

Isiteverevenreallyover · 04/11/2023 11:19

The bin was empty.
I tried searching for it with key words and also looking for it manually. It's gone with little bits left behind in random 'untitled document's

Its the only document I ever interact with under that account.

Have you clicked on ‘learn more’ in the bin and followed the steps? I can’t see how it can have been the only file you ever had in the drive, you get 15gb for free, you also said you did have lots of other stuff in there. Did you get warnings about your stuff being deleted? I think follow the steps to contact google, the longer you leave it, the more likely it is to be lost forever.

No there's loads of documents that have been shared with me in the past, and resources saved from previous jobs, copies of certificates eg etc but this document is the only one that I actually use. The rest are all for safekeeping. I don't interact with the others, just this one. This is the only Google doc under this account that I open, write in and read. Everything else is a bit of a dumping ground.

Yes I was getting warnings about space so deleted loads of stuff and bought more storage in case this was the problem but it's still gone. I'll try 'learn more now. Thanks

Were you accessing it and using it through a browser?

firsttimemam8 · 04/11/2023 11:57
  1. do you have another account like a work one that you might be logged in on? Try going to your little icon in the top right and making sure you're in the correct account

  2. look for your most recent items and work through these systematically. What you want to do in each one is head to the top panel where there's a little clock with an arrow around it - this allows you to see any changes that have been made. Look to see if you've accidentally overwritten a document. All changes are stored in here.

If you managed to find it, make a hard copy of it and download it, and also title it!

No either the drive app or the doc app

If you're trying through the app, instead try through your browser heading to drive.google.com and logging in.

Thank you for all the tips everyone! Will try them and get back to you. I have an old phone that I haven't used since August. Wondering if it's worth a try looking via the app there.
