Yes, official peeps though. Someone took a few lava samples.

Isak has done a very long livestream it's still going!

Puffinshop · 17/03/2024 19:59

The lava flow is currently approaching Suðurstrandarvegur at a rate of 12 m/h, meaning that if it continues it will reach the road in 20 hours.

If it reaches the sea it will be a whole different scenario. I read that the lava will react with the sea water to create hydrogen chloride. So that wouldn't be great.

CrunchyCarrot · 17/03/2024 21:12

During the daylight it was hard to see any of the new lava, but by night it's clear the eruption is still pushing out more so I guess the flow going down towards the road/sea is slowly advancing. Not good if it cuts the road.

It wouldn't be great but it wouldn't cause the level of problem that it would have if for example it had erupted underwater and was explosive causing an ash cloud.
Any gases and ash from this would be pretty small scale and localised. If there's a moderate or stronger wind any gas will quickly be dispersed.

Were you watching Isak's drone footage of the quarry filling up? It was incredible!

Which of his videos included this? Do you have an approximate time stamp?

This is the stream where the lava reaches the quarry and starts going into it. Timestamp: approx 2.57:00

Weather was dreadful, too, so he did a fantastic job.

There were 2 more videos following that. Isak moved closer and that was even more awesome.

Zonder · 23/03/2024 06:57

That's amazing.

DarcyProudman · 23/03/2024 17:32

About how high are the lava spurts? It’s hard to guage from the webcams, they could be 10 foot or 100 foot 😊

Puffinshop · 26/03/2024 19:47

Still going strong. Apparently the lava might be coming directly from deeper down now, so it might be another long lasting eruption like 2021... but who knows, they do say a lot of stuff that seems to be educated guesswork and I suppose it's intended to be taken as such.

A Blue Lagoon employee was admitted to the hospital a few days ago with symptoms of gas poisoning (I don't know if staff are generally there atm, it's closed to customers anyway). And we've seen many reports of unhealthy gas levels in nearby areas, depending on which way the wind's blowing.

The police say there is no justification for the Blue Lagoon to reopen while the eruption is ongoing.

bluecomputerscreen · 26/03/2024 19:53

a friend who is a geologist was there is november just before the firsf fissures in grindavik to set up instruments.

they lost a lot of the measuring devices since (no idea what they are measuring tbh). access for researchers is, rightly, highly regulated and restricted now. friend has plans to go after easter if they get the permit.

Puffinshop · 26/03/2024 20:22

Good luck to your friend! Iceland is an amazing place for geologists. Far too late for me as I went down a humanities route but living here makes me wish sometimes I had gone into earth sciences.

KenAdams · 26/03/2024 20:29

Did they manage to raise the berm that was causing concern does anyone know?

OP posts:
carerlookingtochangejob · 26/03/2024 22:44

Sounds like they are planning to blast a channel to the west of grindavik to divert the lava to the sea.
Seems an extraordinary length to go to to protect a town which is fundamentally lost. Best case scenario it likely will uninhabitable for decades.

CrunchyCarrot · 07/04/2024 17:32

Eruption from the final cone active has suddenly ramped up as of the last hour! Visible on this webcam:

Livestream from Isak Finnbogason is expected within half an hour.

Sleepwhatsthazzz · 07/04/2024 18:03

I've been following and watching for a while now, thanks to everyone who is keeping us updated. It is fascinating. I am hoping to visit Iceland later in the year

countrygirl99 · 07/04/2024 18:11

@Sleepwhatsthazzz we go 2 months today. So excited.

Puffinshop · 07/04/2024 18:39

It's looking really cool at the moment!

They just reopened the Blue Lagoon yesterday "despite high levels of poisonous gas in the area". 😐 Apparently it's all fine.

RomComPhooey · 07/04/2024 18:57

Are they dim? Christ almighty I wouldn't be going.
