I'm glad the risk is reducing for the town. They'll have enough to contend with from the quake damage and subsidence.

Newgirls · 24/11/2023 08:30

Yes sounds more positive

TentChristmas · 24/11/2023 18:28

Will they be able to move back though? Now there is a magma tunnel under the town won’t that be there forever as a risk? Or does it just solidify/empty?

SlowBoiledFrog · 24/11/2023 23:00

That sounds like Stranger Things, not sure I'd want to move back.

Puffinshop · 25/11/2023 00:00

It will solidify if it doesn't erupt. It has already started to solidify.

The problem in that scenario really is the damage that's already occurred and the threat that something similar will happen in the future.

I wouldn't have felt happy living there since 2021 personally.

XpelairHamPortal · 25/11/2023 00:14

De-lurking: I've been following the thread and the events in Iceland over the last couple of weeks. I'm pleased that the level of threat is being downgraded and that the residents are getting more access to their homes as a result. I do wonder though whether it wil be feasible for people to return in the short to medium term. I hadn't realised until I watched the Youtube video linked above (the one with Prof Þórðarson) that Grindavik is literally sitting on top of the mid-atlantic ridge. I knew in general terms that Iceland is atop it, but not specifically that it passes along the Reykyanes Peninsula and under Grindavik. The residents must be so worried about the future.

Zonder · 27/11/2023 11:59

Oh. I thought perhaps it wouldn't happen. What a shame.

Newgirls · 27/11/2023 12:55

I was hoping it was all going calm

sp blue lagoon is shut still yes? That’s sad for the jobs and tourism if so

Puffinshop · 27/11/2023 13:19

Oh. I thought perhaps it wouldn't happen. What a shame.

Well, nothing volcanic has happened yet and there's no guarantee it will.

CrunchyCarrot · 27/11/2023 16:58

Just a lot of shakin' goin' on, really. 😎Hopefully that'll be all!

Rae36 · 27/11/2023 18:10

It must be so unsettling for everyone. Are people still allowed to go in and collect more of their possessions from their homes? What a weird situation to know your house and all your stuff is there but chances are you'll never live there again.

Puffinshop · 27/11/2023 21:30

Yes, there's increased scope to go in now. It was a quick in and out, but now people can be there longer and take their time.

Authorities are saying it's unlikely anyone from Grindavík will be home for Christmas.

CrunchyCarrot · 28/11/2023 09:07

Loved this latest from Just Icelandic, not about the Grindavik situation although he does mention it in passing as he keeps trying to go there with his thermal drone. Instead he is reporting on the 'hottest highway in Iceland' - I don't know where it is exactly although he did mention '20km from Reykjavik', am sure @Puffinshop will know though.

Thermal Drone Confirms Increasing Heat Under Iceland's hottest Highway

Icelands hottest highway just keep on getting hotter since a new geothermal area is directly under it and still growing like the thermal drone has confirmed....

That's the road that goes over Hellisheiði between Reykjavík and Hveragerði/Selfoss. If you look up Dalakot (the white building with red roof in the video) or Hellisheiði power station on Google maps you can see where that stretch is.

It's always steaming a certain amount there - hence the power station, tons of geothermal power available. Interesting if things are shifting around there somehow.

Newgirls · 28/11/2023 15:51

yes surely they wouldn’t if there was still movement - good news!

XpelairHamPortal · 28/11/2023 22:11

Yeah they must be pretty confident that there's no magma close by to be poking around with a digger 😂

quivers · 28/11/2023 22:30

I see The Independent is continuing to spout sensationalist cobblers about all this online.

Puffinshop · 29/11/2023 21:14

@CrunchyCarrot Keilir. It means 'cone' and it's the distinctive triangle mountain you can see from across the bay.

Thank you! It's an amazing shape.
