Does anyone else suddenly have bad PMS in their mid 30s?

I can't really think of a time I've ever had PMS, not enough to notice anyway. However since I hit my mid 30s over the last year or so I've noticed that I actually feel like I struggle with every day things for about 10 days of the month. Mainly the week before my period.

I have absolutely no patience, I am irritated by everyone and everything. Things that don't normally bother me make my blood boil. I feel so tired and just like I can't cope with day to day life.

And then a couple of days into my period I am fine and back to normal. Those 10 days feel truly awful though and it's hard to feel like I will ever snap out of it.

Does anyone else have this and how do you manage it?

I found it got gradually worse throughout my late twenties. Now in my mid thirties I feel terrible 2 weeks out of 4.

I track my period so if I wake up feeling gad I can check and know it's that I'm premenstrual, not suddenly very depressed which helps in itself. Sleep, exercise and a good diet all help me a bit as well but easier said than done.

I wish I had answers for you but I'm still trying to work it out myself, you have my full sympathy though as it's awful not feeling like yourself half the time.

Are you me op?! I’m exactly the same. I also have anxiety badly. I’m ok until about a week and a half before my period then everything annoys and upsets me. I can barely cope at work. Have you tried anything to stop it? I’ve tried taking an array of vitamins and stuff but nothing works.

MissKittyFantastico84 · 03/11/2023 19:48

Yes, definitely. I get the rage and very bad anxiety a day or two before my period. It's got a lot worse over the last few years (I've just turned 39). I also feel incredibly fatigued for a day in the lead up too. I wish I just cried at adverts like I used to!

I also get serious rage. I'm 36. Hoping someone pops by with a miraculous solution..!

Thank god it isn't just me. It's so weird that I've never suffered from it before and now it's so bad. I'm taking some kind of herbal supplement for PMS but I can't say it has helped so far.

It sounds so dramatic but I feel like I actually can't cope with life during those 10 days. It's awful, I don't want to leave the house or speak to anyone.

Yep. It's awful. I think it's actually pmdd.

MrsBudd · 03/11/2023 19:53

I definitely didn't have it this bad in my younger years. I've tried vitamins but nothing really made any difference. Considering going back on the pill but that made me feel odd as well tbh, not sure what is worse!

oneuponedown · 03/11/2023 20:02

Yes.
I've never really had bad pms and had light, short periods. Now mid thirties and post kids I have longer, heavier periods with more pain when they first start. I have terrible lack of concentration, down in the dumps and just off for a while beforehand also.

Snowonthebeachx · 03/11/2023 20:19

I'm mid 30s and ttc no 2 and my periods are as bad as they were when I was a teenager 😕. Lifestyle changes do help sometimes but a lot of it is stress related and out of my hands. But it is about a quarter of the year feeling a bit shit! I'm about to start some investigations so am curious about whether my hormones are quite in balance.

Sapphire387 · 03/11/2023 20:21

Yes, mine got worse in my thirties. I am now 38 and recently had a baby. I had my first postpartum period last month and I was very grumpy beforehand. It's awful, you have my sympathies.

ohnop · 03/11/2023 20:23

I actually am having to start considering it when booking holidays etc which seems crazy.

I went on holiday this year the week before my period and I was moody and miserable the whole holiday. I spent months looking forward to the trip and it was ruined by my mood swings.

As above. Google PMDD

HungryButterfly · 03/11/2023 20:36

I'm awful just after I ovulate..I used to only have PMT. Now my PMT isn't that bad but just after ovulations I'm so low, like crying at everything.

Have a look at this...

Yes!!! I’m so glad Im not alone. Exactly the same!

lightelmqueen · 03/11/2023 20:41

I'm 35 and I'm exactly the same. I have never had an issue with pms. If I wasn't bleeding for four days of a month I would never have known I was on my period, but now it is horrid. I get really anxious a week before my period and don't want to do anything. I'm really snappy and just so tired all the time but don't sleep any way due to insomnia (that and having a 3 year old with sleep apnoea and a 1 year old that doesn't sleep through yet)
