What were you scared of as a kid that wasn't meant to be scary?

For me it was Dastardly and Muttley. I have no idea why but I was terrified of them and if I woke up in the night to use the bathroom I used to run because I thought they were hiding in my attic and would snatch me and pull me up.

It's just funny looking back because they're not even scary characters and not meant to be😂

Maggie Thatcher, I was absolutely terrified of her.

I think it was hearing my parents talking about how wicked she was, lol.

Actually this has just prompted me
... the spitting image puppets made me feel really uncomfortable

The entire cast of Grease! It was blatantly obvious to my eight year old self that the actors were all properly old (at least 25) yet everyone was pretending they were teenage youngsters. Rizzo had actual wrinkles FFS!

This reminds me of seeing Jimmy Krankie on TV, when I was about six. I knew there was something odd about this schoolboy with wrinkles, but I couldn’t work out what it was …

Edward Scissorhands.... thought he was the scariest thing I've ever seen

Morris dancers. Still not keen now.

Never go to Hastings on a May bank holiday weekend. They have a green man festival and some sort of Morris dancers convention and the whole place is packed with them. Went with parents and family friends to it one weekend as stepdad had bought a holiday flat nearby.

Piers and those open type wooden stairs. Planks of wood with a gap. Terrifying!

These scared me too .
Also scared of high level toilet cisterns and certain pipes in public toilets.
And wolves ! So many scary stories of people being eaten by wolves. My mum kept telling me they weren't found in the wild where we lived - but it didn't make any difference. I couldn't even look at the pages in my story books which had a wolf on them .
I'm not sure if it was about the wolf dressed in grandma's clothing, but I still get freaked by pictures of animals in clothing, or people dressed up as such .

Clowns. They're meant to be funny but they all end up looking terrifying. I still can't stand them.

I don’t mind clowns but one of the Tales of the Unexpected programmes had a mechanical clown who laughed and moved in a glass case on a seaside pier with entertainments, I’ve never been able to find it, but it was meant to be scary.

I was terrified of Rolf harris's wobble board.
(Turns out I wasn't a hundred million miles off the really scary thing.)

Michael Barrymore used to make my slesh crawl and make me really uncomfortable. Everyone loved the jolly cheeky chap, I used to have to leave the room when he was on. Similarly but for different reasons, Paula Yates on BBreakfast. I just saw so much darkness and she made me really uncomfortable.

OmegaAmigo · 03/11/2023 17:45

Mick Hucknall. I was petrified of him and would cover my ears and cry whenever a Simply Red song came on the radio.

Growlybear83 · 03/11/2023 17:50

My parents had a big electric art deco clock with a window in the top which showed a sea scene with a little boat that rocked in the waves, and a sky that changed from sunrise to sunset. One of my earliest memories from when I was about three was my absolute terror when I saw the clock. I used to have nightmares about it chasing me, and I refused to go into our front room, where it sad on the sideboard, for several years. The clock now has pride of place in my dining room 😂

@Mamette It's this

I don't know what it is about it, but even now it still creeps me out 😅

🤣🤣Yes they were pretty terrifying too

Monstermunchx1000 · 03/11/2023 18:04

Hmmmm let me see.....
Someone mentioned Andy pandy, yes I completely agree.
I had lots of porcelain dolls, lovely and cute during the day, come night, omg the creepiest demon dolls known to man. Scared the crap out of me.
Men with beards, this fear stopped about age 6.
Weetabix - I can't explain this one. Aged about 4 I couldn't go near it.
Those sand mounds on wet sand on the beach that looked like worms (just looked this up, they are essentially lugworm poo mounds).

Liamgallaghersparka · 03/11/2023 18:07

The bloke who played the keyboards in Sparks. I would hide behind the chair whenever he was on Top of the Pops.

justanothermanicmonday1 · 03/11/2023 18:08

This entertainer in Glasgow city centre was dressed as a white robot. Scared the living shit out of me 😂

@mapff oh yes. I was thinking of this but yours is definitely creepier.

It’s the lost-soul moaning noises I don’t like on this. But then they are balanced out by a very jaunty synth sound so overall not too bad

Zebedee from the Magic Roubdabout, I had to hide behind the sofa when I thought he was about to appear. My brother and sisters only had to say "Boing!" to me and I'd be having a meltdown!

witchbitch22 · 03/11/2023 18:38

There was a BBC adaptation of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe around when I was young. It was really 90's - people dressed up in beaver costumes, very little CGI and Aslan the lion very robotic. But the wolf character (who again, was very clearly a man in a wolf costume) terrified me especially when he growled. Please tell me someone else has seen this 😂

All of this has the makings of the scariest film ever... 'Billy Wind and the Crystal Tips'

Soundtrack covered... lots of songs to include.

His family are clowns and he flushes people down the toilet, bathroom decorated with eerie wallpaper. Whilst the rag and bone man screams outside and through the radio, perched nect to a fully seeded pumpkin.

Its got Oscar winner written all over it.

Now thats a movie. A rogue bad ass street light petrifying everyone by knocking on their windows at. night with its a arms. It's got no feet so can't walk, therefore it has to jump

I'll shut up now I've just scared myself shitless. 😂😂

OnlyOpenMouthToChangeFeet · 03/11/2023 19:00

My so called father 😕

Flushing the toilet. Used to stand poised ready to run, flush then gallop downstairs as fast as I could so the monster didn't get me (the one I'd woken up by flushing, of course).

I was the same!

I was even worse in public toilets
