What were you scared of as a kid that wasn't meant to be scary?

For me it was Dastardly and Muttley. I have no idea why but I was terrified of them and if I woke up in the night to use the bathroom I used to run because I thought they were hiding in my attic and would snatch me and pull me up.

It's just funny looking back because they're not even scary characters and not meant to be😂

Nuns.
Street lights. I had one that lived in the entry behind my House when I was a kid. I was terrified of him. I used to call him Billy wind. I don't know where I got that from.😂

PinkyDinkyDoodle · 03/11/2023 14:36

@Milarky I loved Crystal
Tips and Alistair. Please thank your relation from me for many hours of childhood pleasure.

persister · 03/11/2023 14:54

It's a revelation to hear that other people were terrified of flushing the toilet too - I've never mentioned it to anyone (in case they thought I was crazy) so all my life I've thought it was just me and my daft siblings!

Bookist · 03/11/2023 14:54

The entire cast of Grease! It was blatantly obvious to my eight year old self that the actors were all properly old (at least 25) yet everyone was pretending they were teenage youngsters. Rizzo had actual wrinkles FFS!

New Years Eve always made me feel anxious as a child. There was something so discomforting about a year dying out and everyone celebrating. Even the long, drawn out way it sounds always sounded ominous to me. It always sounded like something to be feared, like the Ides of March or something!

Pushkinini · 03/11/2023 14:57

Jimmy Savile. Gave me the creeps as a small child. My fear was validated.

For some reason I find the thought of Billy Wind waiting outside your house day and night genuinely creepy!

Pinktops · 03/11/2023 15:09

Sweep from Sooty and Sweep, absolutely terrified of him 😄

LittleGreenDuck · 03/11/2023 15:10

Morris dancers. Still not keen now.

Santa and the priest in church.

@Pushkinini its very difficult to say if this is hindsight or not but I first heard about Jimmy Savile on his death and my reaction was terror - I was a grown adult at the time and the rumours of abuse hadn’t come to public attention yet. What makes it even odder is that I’m extremely trusting and vulnerable but as soon as I saw footage of him I felt so incredibly wary and creeped out, for want of a better word. I guess when he was coming to prominence before I was born people must have sort of double-bluffed themselves, like “he looks so much like the personification of stranger danger he can’t possibly be a dangerous stranger”?

LittleGreenDuck · 03/11/2023 15:16

Oh, and allotments. It's where the bodies are buried.

I remembered another one. The picture of John Wesley, founder of Methodism, on the front of a Ladybird book. My dad told us that if we played in the driving seat of a car someone would come and take us away (presumably meaning SS?? Weird story on its own) Anyway I always pictured that 'someone' being John Wesley.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 03/11/2023 15:33

Crutches. I used to call them mummies because My Mum broke her leg when I was little and I was messing around with them.
My mum said “Don’t touch them, they’re mummy’s. Obviously in my toddler mind I must have thought they were called mummies rather than them belonging to my mummy from then on I was terrified of them. I remember seeing some in Nursery when I went on a message with the Teacher and freaking out.

@Milarky
I loved Chrystal tips and my hair grew in a similar pyramid shape whenever I tried to grow it. Not a good look !

Crystal Tipps was my mum's NN for me as, I too, had wild hair that grew outwards. She usually only called me it when we were at home and had no visitors. She forgot herself 1 day, answered a knock on the door then yelled..."Crystal, there's somebody to see you"....cue a very confused looking new boyfriend....I was 17 at the time. 😂

mapff · 03/11/2023 16:12

This is really random, but the background music in Who Wants To Be A Millionaire used to freak me out 😂

Samcro · 03/11/2023 16:26

birds
something to do with seeing the film when I was a bit to young.

Omg our minds work in such a weird way, but I can actually understand this happening. 😅

Earliest memory, in my pushchair being terrified of red traffic lights!

Andy Pandy - face, movements, all sinister.
One particular Enid Blyton illustration of an angry goblin stamping his foot.

Illustration in ladybird book of ballet Petrushka where a male character is stabbed, and the picture is of him dying with his eyes rolling - that one still bothers me now tbh.

I really want to see this for some bizarre reason

Redlarge · 03/11/2023 16:31

All of this has the makings of the scariest film ever... 'Billy Wind and the Crystal Tips'

Soundtrack covered... lots of songs to include.

His family are clowns and he flushes people down the toilet, bathroom decorated with eerie wallpaper. Whilst the rag and bone man screams outside and through the radio, perched nect to a fully seeded pumpkin.

Its got Oscar winner written all over it.

ArcticBells · 03/11/2023 16:35

The coal man

zelda10 · 03/11/2023 16:38

Sloths and the keyboard player from Sparks.

Dexterwontstopfarting · 03/11/2023 16:40

The little arrows on the opening credits of Dads Army. Terrified me.

Orchidgarden · 03/11/2023 16:42

Clowns. They're meant to be funny but they all end up looking terrifying. I still can't stand them.
