Forgot to wash spinach - would you still eat the meal?

I completely forgot to wash the spinach before putting it in the curry. It was a Gousto meal and said on the packet of spinach to wash before use. Still fine to eat, right? My friend thinks not!

I’ve never washed spinach.

honeyfox · 02/11/2023 18:49

Me neither!

EvelynKatie · 02/11/2023 18:49

Definitely fine, I'm often too lazy to wash vegetables.

I think the main issue is spinach can be gritty if not washed. Have a mouthful of the curry and see if it’s gritty.

I’ve never washed spinach.

Thanks, I thought as much! My friend just threw me a bit as we were on FaceTime and she said we’d have to make something else. Was a bit puzzled!

Yes. Never wash spinach. Your friend is massively over reacting!

Heartbreaktuna · 02/11/2023 18:50

I have never washed any veg unless I could visibly see soil or something

ComtesseDeSpair · 02/11/2023 18:50

Another one who’s never washed spinach.

What does your friend think will happen? It’s cooked. At worst it may have had a little earth on it, but you’re not going to notice.

largeprintagathachristie · 02/11/2023 18:50

It’s fine!

ElevenSeven · 02/11/2023 18:50

I wash it to eat raw, not if it’s to be cooked

Lol, it will be fine.

PragmaticWench · 02/11/2023 18:52

A typical bag of supermarket leaf spinach has been washed in a factory.

Caterina99 · 02/11/2023 18:52

cant see how you’d get food poisoning from some unwashed spinach cooked in a hot curry.

It’ll be fine OP

HowcanIhelp123 · 02/11/2023 18:53

You won't get food poisoning from cooked spinach 🤣 i never wash spinach, tbh I never really wash fruit or veg either unless visibly dirty.

I remember getting pregnant and the midwife telling me to wash twice to really make sure you remove pesticides or whatever ... so i started rinsing them quickly ... and stopped when no longer pregnant again 😂

onetwothreeee · 02/11/2023 18:54

my spinach often goes from growing in my garden straight into a pan.

I dont always wash it at all.

There is nothing in spinach that will give you food poisoning

AnnaKing81 · 02/11/2023 18:54

Christ, I never wash anything!

jesshomeEd · 02/11/2023 18:54

What? Grin

No one really washes veg anyway, they just rinse it briefly! Waving it under the tap isn't going to kill salmonella or ecoli.

WithIcePlease · 02/11/2023 18:54

Some spinach is washed already - usually the baby leaf

I don't wash vegetables either though

KnottyKnitting · 02/11/2023 18:58

Surely the heat will kill any bacteria- how odd to suggest you should throw it away!

Nor me. I especially wouldn't wash spinach that's going to be cooked.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 02/11/2023 19:00

This is why I love MN. I turn off the TV news which is showing horrendous stuff, and come to MN to read about the dilemmas of washing spinach.

I've never washed spinach. Your friend is Batshit

OP, I made a recipe from the Diabetes UK site that needed spinach added 10 minutes before serving just to wilt it down. Had it for dinner the other day and the remainder this evening. And very tasty it was too.

I can't believe that people would not eat food because something hadn't been washed (unless it visibly had mud clinging to it).

Another batshit thread.
