Forgot to wash spinach - would you still eat the meal?

I completely forgot to wash the spinach before putting it in the curry. It was a Gousto meal and said on the packet of spinach to wash before use. Still fine to eat, right? My friend thinks not!

I wash all my fruit and veg all of the time.

This wouldn’t bother me though.

I think when it’s cooked it kills any germs anyway.

Most people eat baby spinach which is processed and washed and doesn’t have dirt or insects in it. Proper spinach that you get in bunches from the grocers is inedible if you don’t wash it. So depends on the type.

Next time when making a curry use frozen chopped spinach. It’s healthier and you get more value for money

ClemmyTine · 02/11/2023 19:50

Going off thread with something not dissimilar (sorry) a friend of mine will throw away supermarket vegetables that have gone past their sell/use by date.

StillWantingADog · 02/11/2023 19:53

I never wash spinach unless it looks visibly dirty which it never does

MargaretThursday · 02/11/2023 19:53

It will be on your death certificate "death by unwashed spinach".

Seriously though, I don't think even dm washed spinach and she washed almost everything else.

Surely2023IsTheYearForMyRainbowBaby · 02/11/2023 19:53

Never washed spinach in my life.

Absolutely fine to eat! Though I did find a small slug in the last bag I had, and did wash the rest of the bag after that. But don't tell your crazy friend that.

Extra protein! 😁

SoAndSoSaidSo · 02/11/2023 19:54

I buy washed ones, just so I don't have to worry about grit. That's the only reason I would wash any anyway.

People are just insane, no wonder there's so much food waste. It's been cooked fgs

LaMarschallin · 02/11/2023 19:59

I only use frozen or "washed and ready to eat" spinach because I hate getting the gritty feeling from inadequately washed spinach.
I'd have a spoonful of the curry to check whether or not it's gritty, if I were you.
If it's not gritty, I'd eat it.

Comedycook · 02/11/2023 20:03

I had horrendous food poisoning from unwashed spinach...never been so ill! But it was raw...no idea if cooking kills whatever it is that can make you ill

wizzbitt · 02/11/2023 20:05

I love spinach!I tend to buy the ready washed stuff and eat handfuls like crisps. One time I bought from another shop and after a few mouthfuls felt some grit and saw I was supposed to wash it. Nothing happened. All was fine.
I hope you enjoyed your meal.

Icefoot · 02/11/2023 20:09

If there's anything on it that would cause food poisoning a rinse under the tap isn't going change that cookin it probably would you wash it because it might be gritty, but it won't harm anyone

AutumnIsMyFriend · 02/11/2023 20:10

I have never washed spinach! I don’t wash veg at all

MrShady · 02/11/2023 20:14

I'm severely immunocompromised and only wash stuff that might be gritty like celery or leeks
My consultant has gone from "are you washing your fruit and veg?" To "please bite the apple before the horse and not the other way round"

NoLostCause · 02/11/2023 20:15

I would never have even thought to wash spinach unless it had visible dirt or soil on it.

Jom222 · 02/11/2023 20:16

I wouldn't eat it because of the grit it often has as well as general ick. So many people get severely ill from spinach I avoid raw spinach tbh.

Sorrytomoan · 02/11/2023 20:17

I've had food poisoning from unwashed raw spinach, it's completely different to other veg!

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 02/11/2023 20:18

I have never washed spinach, wouldn’t occur to me!

soundsys · 02/11/2023 20:20

Yeah it's fine. I mean it might be a little gritty but won't kill anyone!

Dymaxion · 02/11/2023 20:22

@ThingsinJars parasites ! do any of them make you lose weight ? asking for a friend Grin

DS actually managed to ingest fox poo, I spoke to a Professor in microbiology who was very much 'shit gets eaten happens' and not to worry if he had a robust immune system !

Princessfluffy · 02/11/2023 20:22

I rinse all my fruit and vegetables but I wouldn't do this to spinach if the bag said pre washed. I generally try to buy pre washed spinach so I don't have to mess about rinsing it in the colander.

If I forgot to wash it and it wasn't pre washed I would still eat the dish though.

I always rinse the washing up too although I know not everyone does this. Looking at you, DH.
