Forgot to wash spinach - would you still eat the meal?

I completely forgot to wash the spinach before putting it in the curry. It was a Gousto meal and said on the packet of spinach to wash before use. Still fine to eat, right? My friend thinks not!

I’ve never washed it and, until this thread, hadn’t realised that it was the norm to do so.

JamSandle · 02/11/2023 20:23

I very rarely bother washing Spinach etc which i know is very lazy of me.

LilyLemonade · 02/11/2023 20:24

I’m surprised so many people don’t wash their fruit and veg. I wash everything before eating but I wouldn’t be fussed about accidentally eating unwashed spinach if it’s been cooked.

People who never wash veg - I thought it was to rinse any sprayed on chemicals ? Not to wash off germs and dirt? That said I wouldnt worry this one time

Food poisoning from spinach?

Bubbles254 · 02/11/2023 20:28

My main concern would be the pesticides, spinach is usually towards top of the dirty dozen list for contamination. Having said this as a one off I would eat it but make sure it is either organic or blanched first if used regularly.

GreekDogRescue · 02/11/2023 20:29

Good grief.
Is this a serious question?

underneaththeash · 02/11/2023 20:32

PurpleChrayne · 02/11/2023 19:18

I would because we keep kosher and have to check all salad for bugs.

But if I didn't, I probably would eat it!

Are bugs not kosher!
I’d never considered that.

underneaththeash · 02/11/2023 20:32

Oh and wash nothing.

Food poisoning from spinach?

Yes. You can get food poisoning from spinach. I have had it....I ate unwashed spinach. Was so unwell

Dymaxion · 02/11/2023 20:35

I’m surprised so many people don’t wash their fruit and veg.

I would if obviously caked in soil, with mushrooms, I just flick off the compost residue before chopping and cooking, it's just not something on my radar, I have had food poisoning once in my life and that was over 40 years ago !

Inyourwildestdreams · 02/11/2023 20:39

Surely the dirt just adds to the flavour, no? 😅😂

Another spinach non-washer here 😂

Dymaxion · 02/11/2023 20:40

@Comedycook and that was the only thing you ate in 24hrs ? how do you know it was definitely the spinach ?

Pinkitydrinkity0 · 02/11/2023 20:41

Gads the only veg I wash is mushrooms 🥲

Comedycook · 02/11/2023 20:43

I'm pretty sure it was...It tasted really gritty.. I mean like most food poisoning, you can never be absolutely sure. But whether it was or not, you can absolutely get food poisoning from spinach.

plumtreebroke · 02/11/2023 20:43

Might be a bit gritty if splashed by soil, any insects will be boiled up and invisible, nothing is going to be poisonous. Just forget it and eat.

Edit: I assume you were cooking it?

Tilllly · 02/11/2023 20:43

MrShady · 02/11/2023 20:14

I'm severely immunocompromised and only wash stuff that might be gritty like celery or leeks
My consultant has gone from "are you washing your fruit and veg?" To "please bite the apple before the horse and not the other way round"

Before the horse...?
What?!

Dymaxion · 02/11/2023 20:47

It’s not germs so much as parasites.

@ThingsinJars will a quick rinse in a colander really get rid of all parasites/peticides/bacteria ? or are we talking 'gently massaging each leaf' to be sure territory here ?

stockpilingallthecheese · 02/11/2023 20:48

I've just finished my dinner which contained large amounts of unwashed spinach!

Dymaxion · 02/11/2023 20:48

@stockpilingallthecheese do you have a will ?

cardibach · 02/11/2023 20:48

Comedycook · 02/11/2023 20:03

I had horrendous food poisoning from unwashed spinach...never been so ill! But it was raw...no idea if cooking kills whatever it is that can make you ill

How do you know it was the spinach? Had you eaten nothing but unwashed spinach for 48 hours prior?

cardibach · 02/11/2023 20:51

Jom222 · 02/11/2023 20:16

I wouldn't eat it because of the grit it often has as well as general ick. So many people get severely ill from spinach I avoid raw spinach tbh.

People get ill from spinach? Citation needed…

MumblesParty · 02/11/2023 20:53

What will washing get rid of that cooking won’t, apart from grit?

Dymaxion · 02/11/2023 20:55

@Tilllly if @MrShady has a horse then they have probably ingested a lifetimes worth of poo during ownership of said horse, during grooming and poopicking etc. They possibly have other animals and children who are all bringing in the germs big stylee !

I may also have shared an apple with my old boy, bit for you, bit for me, not a sniff of washing of the apple or handwashing during the process !

ThatWhiteElephant · 02/11/2023 20:59

I'd eat it.
Hope the meal was nice!
