If you watch horror movies, what is one scene that you can think of that sticks out as being one of the scariest scenes you've watched?

I think it is interesting to see what is effective and what different people find scary.

For me it's the scene in hereditary where she's on the ceiling sawing her head off with chicken wire. Absolutely hated that imagery and felt so disturbed!

Usually ghosts, monsters etc do nothing to scare me. Films about bad people and what humans do to one another are far more terrifying to me ! A few that did disturb me though have already been mentioned so

The Descent - A group of girls go potholing. Things go very very wrong. This one terrified me! Really recommend. Best watched in the dark.

Wolf Creek - the rape scenes and the things he said whilst leading up to it were just too much. Knowing they were based on a true story didn't help. I will never ever watch this again.

Eden Lake - Just far too realistic feeling which is really sad.

Creep - the one set in the London underground.

Creep - the one where a guy advertises for someone to come and film his story for a weekend. Better if you know nothing about it before watching it.

Oh that was good.

I was thinking about it this morning and couldn't remember the name. So thank you!

oh yes, the Descent - not the actual film but the accident at the start of it. I'm still freaked out to drive behind any kind of construction type vehicle.

Chocolatecoveredshitpig · 02/11/2023 19:19

Absolutely yes to the ending of The Blair Witch Project - so chilling.
Also, the opening scene of Final Destination, (the first one). That film is the reason I'm now petrified of flying. Never had an issue before! <shudders at the memory>

Laiste · 02/11/2023 19:21

Annihilation - a woman is killed by a bear type thing which then wanders into the derelict house where her 2 friends (iirc) are hiding. When it roars it sounds exactly like their friend screaming for help as she did when it killed her.

SO creepy.

So many! I'm someone who imagine all the scary things happening in my own house every night for weeks afterwards!

  1. The lift scene in the Japanese film The Eye 2002).
  2. I can't remember the name of the film but it's Joe Absolom playing some possessed kid (do they do a Ouija?) and he's stalking others and one hides in a cupboard with slats and is peering out and Joe is getting closer and closer...
  3. Any film with a girl wearing a white dress with long dark hair!
  4. Agree with Blair Witch ending.
  5. TV-wise, yes to the Dr Who angels!
  6. Also TV - The Haunting Of Bly Manor when the nanny is talking to the kids at night and has her back to the stairs and the ghost walks across in the back of shot... Argh!

The Joe Absolom film is Long Time Dead.
When one of them is under the bed and the dead friend is dumped on the floor with the face looking at them

JemimaTab · 02/11/2023 19:25

The scene at the end of The Borderlands where they are “swallowed” by the tunnels under the church.

And the scene at the end of Saint Maud (which is essentially about religious mania) where you get a brief glimpse of what is actually happening, rather than what the main character imagines.

Both of those made my blood run cold.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 02/11/2023 19:30

The final scene in Saint Maude still haunts ne.

This scene from a Japanese film, ‘Kairo’ (Pulse), when I first saw it gave me the full body chills:

Pulse/Kairo - Yabe and the Ghost Scene

The terrifying "ghost scene" of Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Pulse in its correct aspect ratio and brightness level! For educational purposes.

Eden lake.. hands down the most horrific film I have ever watched.. I honestly had nightmares for week. It was far too real. X

For me it’s the outback horror film Wolf Creek. I found the whole thing so disturbing that I had to leave the cinema more than once. The torture scenes & the build up are horrifying. Also it’s got a slightly low budget Blair Witch Project feel to it that makes it feel more authentic.

Me too! Really disturbing film, I remember watching it on my own and getting up halfway through to make sure all the doors and windows were locked in the house

Like PP I am a big horror fan but the Salem’s Lot window scene still puts the hairs on the back of my neck up.

I've just watched it on YouTube and it was very mediocre. Maybe I need context.

FaintlyInglorious · 02/11/2023 19:58

winniethepooped · 02/11/2023 12:08

This scene was moreso disturbing than anything else...and not in a horror film....

The dead baby in the cot in Trainspotting. Absolutely horrific and scares me more than anything in life really as a mother to two boys.

I saw Trainspotting pre-children and this didn't affect me.

I've just watched it on YouTube now and OMG, I'm in absolute bits.

YourTruthorMine · 02/11/2023 20:03

Most scenes from The Shining, it's my all time scariest film:

Woman in the Bath
the son riding his trike with the creepy twins watching
'Here's Johnny'

MinnieL · 02/11/2023 20:04

OP you seem like my kinda galWink

As soon as I saw your thread, I literally thought about that scene in Hereditary and then I see you’ve mentioned it in your opening post!! That bit was scary as fuck! I haven’t watched Hereditary since and I probably won’t ever watch it again.

I saw Evil Dead Rise in cinema and my GOD. The scene that you’re talking about had me squinting😂 I was barely able to look at the screen! Great film all the way though.

Another for me is Tusk. When they reveal what’s happened to Wallace I actually can’t stand to look at him. It makes me feel so scared/uncomfortable/unsettled. I’ll never watch that film again either

MinnieL · 02/11/2023 20:05

Also the bit where the Tall man comes in the doorway of ‘It Follows.’ I screamed so loudly😂

Mummy2Sienna · 02/11/2023 20:13

I’m a real wuss so even reading this thread is shitting me up. I just can’t really watch horror films as they scare me so much and stay with me for ages. My choices are probably pretty tame to most horror fans but: the bit in It where penny wise is in the drain talking to the little boy and suddenly his face changes and he has really sharp teeth, and he drags him into the drain. Even more upsetting as I think that was loosely based on a real life child killer.

also Jack Nicholsons face when he’s frozen in the snow at the end of the shining. In fact all of the shining.

And the bit in twin peaks: fire walk with me when Bob climbs over the back of the sofa

Laiste · 02/11/2023 20:14

Sinister - there's two instances where the demon in the photo (and under the water in the swimming pool iirc) turns it's head slowly to look straight at the camera.

That really freaked me out - i think it's something to do with it's unexpectedly breaking the 4th wall. Which is rare in a horror film.

Dressed to Kill is a fantastic suspense film-those feet under the curtain-so so creepy. Highly recommend!!!

Weeping Angels-my DC all scared of statues for years

Twin Peaks-brilliant and so ground breaking and so so so creepy scary-like jump and scream scary

I was messed up for ages after watching Hereditary, the scene where she see's her mum in the room was so spooky and the ending is just 😱I think it's a good film, better than Midsommer but I don't know if I can ever watch it again!

Yes!! The way the camera turns and her mum is just standing there. WTF. I hate that film so much😂

LibbyL92 · 02/11/2023 20:25

So I’m pretty sure it was a recent film released the last 4 years? Pretty sure it was wrong turn (or similar/can’t remember which number but deffo recent)

and not so much scary but it’s stuck with me.

the very last scene where they throw their victim into a dark cave, fully alive but they cut off their ears, eyes and tongue. And they were left to roam around in the cave with other people kidnapped from the forest.

it made me feel sick and I thought how scary that would be!

going to now keep searching for the film because it’s bugging me.

LibbyL92 · 02/11/2023 20:28

got it! Was Wrong Turn 2021.

Now that Tales of the Unexpected has been mentioned, I feel I should put a word in for the episode "The Flypaper." the ending of that is chilling even if, as with most episodes, it was actually pretty expected!

Edited

Definately, it is so believable, and really could happen, which is why is is so scary.

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 02/11/2023 20:49

I love a good horror film. Used to be shit scared of zombies but have well and truly cured myself of that.

I think they worst thing I’ve seen is when I accidentally found one of the Saw films on the tele. It was a clip of a girl tied down with a man over her blowtorching her eyeball out while she screamed and screamed. Absolutely turned my stomach. It wasn’t a made up monster, it was a human being. Terrifying.

I don’t know how people manage to make these films. Some of them are just horrible.

I bought the original tv adaptation DVD from Amazon and always watch it on on Christmas Eve eve! The ending on the boating lake😯
Have you seen the theatre production of Woman in Black? Jesus H Christ, I get the heebie jeebies just thinking about it.

I associate this film with Christmas eve as well. I watched it for the first time when I was a kid, maybe 13, and in the house alone on Christmas eve. My parents had gone to church. It made such an impression on me I can remember where I was sitting (on the floor in front of the fire) and which cushion I was hiding behind.
