Shoe storage? How to solve a messy hallway?

I'm at my wits end with my entire family leaving shoes at their backside. I bought two ottomans that are in my hall and the idea started off great but now the boxes have got damaged and kids have got out of way of using them. How do you keep your hall nice and tidy and where do you keep shoes?

Pictures would be fabulous for ideas 💡

We have an Ikea kallax with boxes (nice ones not bought from Ikea) where everyone keeps their shoes. If they don’t fit in or are nice ones they don’t want bundled in together then they’re kept in bedrooms. I do spend time reminding everyone and at times putting the shoes in but it keeps the hallway tidy.

We’ve got a kallax in the hall where everyone has a box each for shoes. It’s works if the kids can be arsed to use it 🙄 mostly it stays messy until they go back to school the next day.
We probably need more storage as well, there are also always football boots drying out by the back door.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! We do have a utility room at the back so I'm wondering do I get one of these solutions for there instead.

Shoes and coats make everything look untidy lol

I need this help too. Mainly as my hall is a little narrow and couldn't fit a Kallax in. We did have a shoe cupboard but everyone ignored it ...so an easy access option would be better

We have a kallax as well. With the sort of wooden wicker type baskets, bit studier. Me and DP have a box each, kids share and then there’s one for hats, scarves etc.

Whatever you go for make sure it is realistic for your family. We found that quite often the opening and closing of doors to put shoes into shoe cupboards was a step too far. So they were often left outside and then someone had to go and tidy them. Big baskets/open shoe racks may not seem to look as good but they are more likely to be used efficiently.

We ended up building a porch onto the house and putting open shoe racks in there (tried cupboards first...). It has worked really well for years now. We've got five similar (the top bars loop on ours to make a handle which is surprisingly useful) these (as in porch keep hiking boots etc. as well). I was not convinced to start with (DH idea) but they have been great - lightweight so easy to move around for cleaning, even when loaded with shoes).

We have a biggish rope storage basket that we put shoes into. Only fits say 1 pair each (family of 5) but we're a 'dump shoes by the door' kind of family so it made sense and works well. Putting them neatly on a shoe rack wouldn't work for us.
