LOVE the M&S ad

I am so fed up of being told and shown how people should spend Christmas and how things should be done because that’s how they’ve always been…

Bah humbug I say! Sadly for some Christmas is all about routine and is a chore to please everyone!

Every year we get picture perfect images of what Christmas should look like - only for many it really doesn’t look like this for lots of reasons.

And as for the flag… I think people really are stretching if they think M&S were trying to make any political statement!

They have removed something from Facebook following complaints

Not sure what exactly

Rainyday35 · 01/11/2023 22:24

Think this would have been red, silver and green paper party hats in a fire…. People have complained they’re the colours of the Palestinian flag…

I loved the ad OP

grayhairdontcare · 01/11/2023 22:49

It's a shite ad.
I've always managed to do Christmas my way.
Don't need an M&S for that!

Falzarega · 01/11/2023 22:50

Hih. What a nasty advert. Dunno about flag colours or whateve, but there’s nothing cool about throwing a board game over when people are playing it, and hitting a kids toy with a baseball bat. The whole advert feels spiteful and nasty.

Too much hate in the world already now shops are hating on Christmas traditions?!

It’s like a bad copy of that nasty John Lewis xmas ad where a boy trashes the house while his upset mother and sister look on.

It looked like a pretty blah ad to be honest. Much more to stress about than party hats which come from pre bought crackers. If that is what stresses ppl out most ppl most live a very charmed life!

Nickleback · 01/11/2023 23:10

Hannah Waddingham looking magnificent in it!

ssd · 01/11/2023 23:20

I thought it was crap. Was surprised it was marks.

Custardpudding · 01/11/2023 23:31

I thought it was awful. Shocked it’s M&S!!

Daffyyellow · 01/11/2023 23:38

The Scrooge of adverts. Horrid messages about trashing Christmas when what they mean is don’t be pressured into it.

But it’s got us talking so maybe effective as well as awful?

Myrestingwitchface · 01/11/2023 23:44

Think there was a good message somewhere that am guessing got totally lost in the execution and agree that it comes across abit mean rather than liberating.

MainlyOnThePlain · 01/11/2023 23:47

I think it was a bit risky - for every person laughing at the junking of a particular tradition there'll be someone else thinking, But... but... but Christmas isn't Christmas without cards/games/party hats!

There are ways of signalling a warm 'hey, it doesn't have to be perfect' without making a section of the audience feel they're being boring for still liking Trivial Pursuit.

TheDogsMother · 01/11/2023 23:52

I thought it was a bit blah and a bit joyless. We definitely do our own Christmas which doesn't totally involve tradition I but didn't love the throwing of the board game or batting of the Christmas toy.

OhDoPutASockInItDear · 02/11/2023 00:01

If they want to make a point that we can celebrate Christmas how we want then instead of showing violence towards toys they could have shown people doing Christmas their way e.g. Going to a Caribbean island instead/just spending it with their partner and wearing pyjamas all day/alone in front of the fire with a huge box of chocs for example. Something nice . Not something nasty and possibly even quite triggering for those of us who have experienced domestic violence and ugly rows at Christmas.

Or am I taking this too seriously?

PictureOfFlorianTray · 02/11/2023 00:02

It's a bit bah humbug.

MNetters might froth but it's a smack in the face to those who love Christmas traditions.

A bit sad really .

Beeswood · 02/11/2023 00:38

I thought it was ok until everthing started getting destroyed.

Is it supposed to be funny? I didn't think so.

shoeawsome · 02/11/2023 00:38

I really liked it!

So many women run ragged over Christmas trying to do everything & please everyone!

seven201 · 02/11/2023 00:53

I enjoyed it.

Itsbecauseiamamum · 02/11/2023 01:10

Havnt watched the ad but the clothes for females absolutely hideous, and polyester I wizzed too Next and the difference was amazing! Have spent £50 in Next and will enjoy wearing tomorrow ,for a night out!!

CallieQ · 02/11/2023 01:15

You won't love it when you've seen it 100 times in the run up to Xmas

HollyBollyBooBoo · 02/11/2023 02:03

One of the most bizarre Christmas ads I've ever seen, hate it.

BiscuitBrewInMyBigBlueMug · 02/11/2023 02:06

It's absolute pants

They don't sell holidays on Caribbean islands but I think you are on to something.

Changing from M and S xmas eve PJs into new M and S PJs, M and S chocolates and a ready meal shared with a pet dog.

And it is about time some supermarkets started selling Xmas food from the numerous cultures in the UK, spicy Pakistani lamb or Jamaican fried chicken.

That would have been a much funnier way of showcasing the celebrities - chef putting his/her feet up with a whole festive Colin the Caterpillar, glamourpuss settling down to Christmas TV in loungewear and big slippers, famous serious journalist forcing everyone to play fancy dress Twister...

I don't think you need to be negative about traditions some people love. I mean, poor Elf on the Shelf. It's not his fault he's been roped into a covert child surveillance operation.

[note to self: pitch "weary Elf on the Shelf's eye view of Christmas" to John Lewis for 2024]
