Worried about this male belly fat

A family member broke up with his girlfriend of 4 years about a year ago. He's small, about five foot five, always had a little belly, but since the breakup he now looks about 7 months pregnant, and it's only his belly he's carrying the weight. I hadn't seen him for a few months but was shocked to see it. No real weight gain anywhere else. He's always been a drinker but I suspect he's been drinking more recently - could this be the cause and is it a cause for concern re his general health? I'm just a worried relative.

This does sound like the impact of very heavy drinking unfortunately. It can have increase the risk or heart attacks and strokes

That's why I'm worried. He's also a shockingly loud snorer!

He'll know he's put on weight and, when his head's in the right place, may attempt to lose it again. It's his business. Honestly, you're coming across like you've never seen a fat person before!

I would be concerned about his liver but I do see a lot of liver patients at work so I’m biased.A swollen liver can be visible of it could be ascites. Or it could be belly fat from comfort eating ( I’m not a qualified professional)
How close are you, could you have a gentle word?

My belly gets like this when I eat a lot of bread. Maybe he just can't be bothered to cook.

Drinking like a fish is usually quickly visible on the skin on your face.
