Toilet seat help! Does it all need to come off? Totally clueless.

I have tried Google but it's not helping.

My toilet seat has cracked (God knows how - I'm really not that heavy!) and it seems to be what is called a 'quick release seat', which means I have easily removed the seat itself from the toilet. What remains is two screws in the toilet itself and two large protruding things (screws? I don't know what anything is called) which would have been inserted into the seat. Recognising the non-protruding things as screws I started to unscrew them but they were stiff and then I wondered whether I actually need to remove them as maybe a new seat would just go on top.

Is this wishful thinking? Presumably it would work like that if I bought the exact same seat but I don't know where it's from (dodgy bathroom guy got it and I think it must have been cheap to have cracked anyway). But are they fairly standard? If I measure and get one the same size, will this work?

Any help very gratefully received.

New seats normally come with new fixings. Really easy to fit. You'll be fine.

I think best thing to do . Is take a few photos of the fixtures. Measure how far apart they are. And then go to B and Q r similar to buy a replacement. You’ll then be able to see what fixings the new seat has and if you need to buy anything extra. If you are really lucky a member of staff might be a retired plumber who has experience

If its an 'ideal standard' put the seat in the upright position and pull upwards. It should come of the two metal sticky up bits.

Order a new seat from a plumbers merchants or bathroom installer. Someone local to me was asking the same question on FB the other week.
