What in earth is this thing? (Caution: fairly grim photo, depending on what it is!)

Went for a walk at a local deer park yesterday and spotted a couple of these weird things.
They were squashy and really quite disgusting (obviously I didn’t touch it, I prodded it with a stick!)
It looked organic rather than part of a dog toy or something like that. No idea if it was interesting to dogs or not, as my dog was far too preoccupied with squirrels.

Any idea what it is?

There are deer around, conker and chestnut trees (in case that’s somehow relevant).

It looks like a foot of some sort.

Google lens says no result for this image which has literally never happened to me before!

Part of a Halloween costume? It looks rubbery.

the fact that the dogs ignored it would suggest to me it’s not organic.

CameleonAreFightingBack · 01/11/2023 10:36

Halloween costume would be my guess.

Did you ever see the opening credits of Invasion of the Bodysnatchers?

Same here!

The biggest was about 1.5 inches long, but there were smaller ones, so not pigs trotter.

A normal dog may have been interested, mine was too busy going crazy about the millions of squirrels taunting her!

They looked real as opposed to part of a toy.

The end of it looked like the broken off part of deer antlers when they shed them, but these were far too small and fleshy (🤢) to be antlers.

Could be part of a root? Dug up by animals?

notlucreziaborgia · 01/11/2023 11:26

Really does look to be something like this. Rubber/silicone costume hands.

Those Dead Man’s Fingers are quite terrifying!
I think it looks like a root personally, it reminds me a bit of a deformed turnip. I also thought of shredded antler velvet, but that's a bit more stringy, like fabric. I wonder if deer are born with "fairy fingers" like horses (a lovely name for an atrocious-looking thing)

Their hooves are coated in a jellyish substance when born, like lambs. Foal hooves are incredible when born!

Kind of wish I’d picked it up for further examination!

And yes I wondered about a root of some sort.

It could be some sort of plant, made squishy by absorbing rain/being in a damp location/rotting. It could be a young animal's hoof, or even a malformed animal body part.
