Do you answer the door to trick or treaters?

I personally don't 😬 though I feel like I should maybe make the effort now I have kids!

When I was younger I remember the streets being really busy and getting an answer at most doors, seems to have changed now the past few years.

Do you answer?

I do. Terracotta cheat pumpkin with fairy lights goes out on the porch when I get home from work, and back in at 7pm when I dish up dinner. I do it because mine loved it when they were little. Mostly get groups of young children, the oldest are about 11. Ours are lovely, all very polite and appreciative.

shivbo2014 · 31/10/2023 19:47

We've had about 20 knocks and we've spent an hour out trick or treating ourselves. It's lovely where we are loads of welcoming houses!

CaptainCallisto · 31/10/2023 19:47

We put a cauldron out with sweets in so children can help themselves. DS1 is autistic and struggles with the anticipation/not knowing when or if the door will go, so it works better for us. There have been loads out tonight, in spite of the weather.

We have had a steady stream of little witches, ghosts and ghouls. Fortunately I bought some sweets just on the off chance. All very excited and extremely polite. With all the crap happening in the world its lovely to have a bit of light relief.

NeverAloneNeverAgain · 31/10/2023 19:49

We answer the door but I've never taken ours trick or treating. I can't get my head around why I tell them not to accept things off strangers but for 1 night it's ok 🤷‍♀️ when they were younger we did a little party but the big 3 don't bother now and baby is too little. We've only had 2 families though. I think the weather has put them off

Optionyougot · 31/10/2023 19:51

I do. We're childfree but I love to do the house and garden up with decorations and we get a steady stream up until 8:30pm usually. All the kids locally have a joke prepared and are polite and appreciative of the bags we make up.

Aquestioningmind · 31/10/2023 19:51

Nope! Curtains drawn and lights off in all the rooms at the front of the house.

If parents want their children to eat candy they can buy it themselves. I'd rather spend that couple of quid on a nice latte from my local independent business.

Maybe I'm a misery...but I don't understand the concept of knocking on peoples door and expecting food.

Cincinnatus · 31/10/2023 19:51

Nobody can get to my front door thank god.

DreamingInPhosphorescence · 31/10/2023 19:51

We have a pumpkin out but no one has knocked yet. But our kids are out in a gang with their friends so they’ll definitely be here later.

hiredandsqueak · 31/10/2023 19:54

No wouldn't answer the door but we don't decorate or have the lights on so wouldn't expect anyone to knock. I stopped answering the door when it was no longer little ones in fancy dress and was instead teens pulling their hoods over their faces tbh.

MrsLeonFarrell · 31/10/2023 19:55

No. We have never participated in Halloween, even when the children were young enough. I do like the modern habit of only knocking where there are decorations. We don't live in the part of town that attracts the trick or treaters but at least we don't disappoint anyone these days.

SoShallINever · 31/10/2023 19:55

Yes, my kids are all grown up but I love seeing everyone else's. Can't wait for GC .

SiennaMillar · 31/10/2023 19:56

No. In fact, I lock the gate so they can’t even get to the front door. The dog might be loose, so it isn’t safe to have people wandering up the driveway in the dark. And my own kids won’t be knocking on strangers’ doors begging for sweets when they’re old enough. Hate it, personally.

RabbitsRock · 31/10/2023 19:56

We only get a handful as we’re on a main ish road. Plus it’s been raining quite heavily. I haven’t put anything outside & actually I haven’t bought any sweets! Nobody has knocked anyway.

Dacadactyl · 31/10/2023 19:57

No I don't answer the door. My kids have never been trick or treating either (altho I think DD has been once when she was at a friend's house) I don't like it, never did it when I was growing up and its not a tradition for me. So we don't partake in it.

Robotalkingrubbish · 31/10/2023 19:58

Definitely not.

fetchacloth · 31/10/2023 19:59

No. I don't answer the door to anyone after dark unless I'm expecting visitors.

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 31/10/2023 20:02

Yes but in an apartment block so it's only the kids who live here.which is great. Max 6, 4 have called so far.

I don't have kids but would like to think the neighbours would do it for mine if I had.

It's low effort and nice to be on friendly terms with neighbours.

CremeEggThief · 31/10/2023 20:04

Only if I can be bothered tbh, which i the same as with anyone else who comes to the door. Not this year.

Furrydogmum · 31/10/2023 20:04

We live in a dark corner, so although I trim up, we rarely get any takers. Was so happy tonight when my only trick or treater came at 5 o clock - lovely little boy who was thrilled when I said take a hand full! The nieces and nephews called round because they feel sorry for me 😂

Pepperama · 31/10/2023 20:05

Yes - must have had almost a hundred kids tonight, more than last year. Our two huge tubs of sweets are depleted so time to switch off the lights and pretend to be out!

BHRK · 31/10/2023 20:07

Yes because it’s once a year and lovely for kids. We decorate and get loads of sweets in

GeraltsBathtub · 31/10/2023 20:07

Yes, I love doing it. I don’t have DC of my own (yet) so I don’t see many children other than my niblings and it makes me feel more part of the community (I work quite far away and don’t know many people here). Plus I trick or treated as
a child so have to pay it forward! I’ve actually just made a note to buy more sweets next year as I had to bring the pumpkin in at 7.15 when we ran out.

Partyowl21 · 31/10/2023 20:08

Quite a few this year weather still dry. Mix of ages including mid age teenagers but all polite, no grabbing, lots of trick or treat, or happy hallloween when door opened. All said thank you, not standing on top of the doorway. All seem to be following the unofficial rule of lights off/no decorations don't knock.

hadrianswallsycamore · 31/10/2023 20:09

We have been through buckets of sweets. It was hugely busy for an hour and a half. We had to buy more sweets! I love seeing the costumes and handing out sweets!
