Do you answer the door to trick or treaters?

I personally don't 😬 though I feel like I should maybe make the effort now I have kids!

When I was younger I remember the streets being really busy and getting an answer at most doors, seems to have changed now the past few years.

Do you answer?

No

Where I live you only knock on peoples doors if they leave out lit pumpkins or have very welcoming Halloween decorations

I could all the DC earlier after school

It's gone quiet now so I guess all the sweets are gone and they're tired and getting ready for bed

They all sounded very cute and excited

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 31/10/2023 19:28

I do, but I live on a busy estate with lots of young families and lots of people decorate their houses. DC are all out tonight, and we didn't have time to decorate this year, but had the pumpkins out until about 5 minutes ago when we ran out of sweets.

RubyBoozeDay · 31/10/2023 19:29

We've had loads of miniature witches, brides of Dracula, skeletons, ghosts, wizards and zombies calling round since it first got dark. We live a bit out of the way but put a sign saying Trick or Treaters Welcome at the top of our drive with a lit pumpkin. It's only one night, and it's so lovely to see the children enjoying themselves.

Yes, we have 2 pumpkins out and some decorations. First one called at 5.15 and will be bringing stuff in at 8pm. So far about 75 children, never known so many and had to send DH out for more sweets.

Every child has been polite, almost all with their parents.

BlueGarters · 31/10/2023 19:35

The cutest were two very small toddlers in dinosaur onesies, we have had hot dogs and jelly and ice cream and will watch a horror film at 8. DH and my DS Gf are scared of horror films.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 31/10/2023 19:35

We do! Never bothered before we had kids, but now I love it. Such a fun, generous, good-humoured night.

(Definitely helps that the kids round here are very polite and appreciative!)

daffodilandtulip · 31/10/2023 19:35

I'd ignore because I'm anti social and precious years it's just been rude older kids taking the piss. But no one has knocked anyway.

EerilyDecorated · 31/10/2023 19:35

Yes, we decorate (well, teen DD did it all this year) and have had loads call, started as soon as it got dark.

feellikeanalien · 31/10/2023 19:36

We are in a small village and have only had one trick or treater. It was rather lovely as she was on horseback. The horse seemed very interested in what was in the sweetie tub!

I don't know whether the kids in the village are just getting too big for trick and treating now but we definitely had more last year and we have got our pumpkin in the window.

SauvignonBlanche · 31/10/2023 19:37

Of course I do, I’m not a grumpy cunt 🎃

TwilightSkies · 31/10/2023 19:39

I left a big bucket of goodies out on our doorstep so that kids can help themselves while me and DD2 go Trick-or-Treating.
She only knocks at houses that are decorated. That’s the rule! A lit pumpkin on the doorstep is the signal!

I love Halloween.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 31/10/2023 19:39

yup. It's been busy - just had to dispatch H out to the corner shop for more supplies. When that lot runs out I'll fetch the pumpkin in.

BitofaStramash · 31/10/2023 19:13

I've had queues of guisers at the door for the last hour.

Little ones doing a party piece and older ones telling (awful) jokes.

I love the Scottish way. I used to go guising when I was wee and I remember having to have a "turn" to do at the neighbours. Once I told a horrendously filthy joke I heard at school. I got it all muddled up but it was still filth.

My gran was furious with me because I'd really upset Sandy and Moira and I was not allowed to ever knock on their door again.

BlowingInTheWind82 · 31/10/2023 19:41

Yes DH taken the kids out Trick or Treating (he’s usually at work) and I’ve been up and down answering the door!

soon as sweets run out then it’s over, rule on our road is, if there are decs then yes knock. If no decs then no knocking as we have some old people on our road.

elliejjtiny · 31/10/2023 19:42

No, nobody in our street does trick or treat.

And because of that I know you're in Scotland (even without looking at your user name)!

TheDandyLion · 31/10/2023 19:15

I was going to ignore but we've not even had a knock.

Same here, I think the rain has kept them away.

TheDogIsInCharge · 31/10/2023 19:42

itsclh · 31/10/2023 19:15

I've only had 2 people knock so far! Thought there would be more as we live on a main road

I live on a main road into my small town and I think that's why so few people knock. I've had ten groups so far and I wish there had been more! I'm sat here in my witches hat and cape too...

My brother lives in a long terrace the other side of town and his area is heaving.

LubaLuca · 31/10/2023 19:43

Yes! We've had loads of little cuties here tonight, I love seeing them. I'd feel like a pretty horrible person to let them go away disappointed - a little sweet is nothing to me, but it is a lovely treat for a small, excited child who's bothered to get dressed up.

We don't get any older ones though, I'd be less chuffed about having my evening disturbed by teens on the take.

NormaLouiseBates · 31/10/2023 19:45

I put a big bucket of treats outside with a sign asking not to knock as the dog freaks out. Had just 3 groups come and the bucket is empty 🥺 H says I shouldn't have expected people to just take one each but I'm a bit gutted. Was I naive to hope people would be decent and not greedy?

caramond · 31/10/2023 19:45

Yes, I decorated this year - not lots but a few lights/lanterns, a metal Halloween sign at the gate etc. Had about 20 groups of visitors. Mostly very polite but one group ended up taking lots and lots from the bowl. I've just brought the lights and decorations in about 20 mins ago after running out of sweets.

In my area most people follow the decorations = ok to knock rule. Neighbours either side have not decorated and I haven't heard anyone knock there.

Muckspout · 31/10/2023 19:45

I answer the door. I must have had about 70 children come to the door this evening.

Sleepimpossible · 31/10/2023 19:45

Yes, of course! Must have had about ten groups calling tonight, some with a parent, some without. All had made an effort and were very polite. Sweets are running low now though, so will probably bring the pumpkin at 8.

cocksstrideintheevening · 31/10/2023 19:46

Yes. We went trick or treating with our kids so it's only fair. My kids now answer the door. It's pretty tame here though, only primary kids and we've run out of treats now so the pumpkins are out an d we won't get anyone else.

Twilight7777 · 31/10/2023 19:46

I just put a plastic cauldron of haribo packets out, and once they’ve gone that’s it
