It’s to allow the pot to be used on an induction hob.

The frying pan looking thing is for when you have don’t have a flat hob, so the coffee maker is on a stable surface. If you have a flat surfaced hob you don’t need it.

As PP says, but I would also use that on a gas hob if my coffee pot was too small to balance on the metal frame.

No point buying the plate if you don't have an induction hob.

It's because induction hobs only work with pans with magnetic bases - otherwise they don't heat up. Moka pots are made of aluminium, which isn't magnetic, so you you could only use it on an induction hob with that plate, which will be magnetic.

When you switch your hob on without a pan on it, does it get hot? If it does, it's a normal electric hob and you don't need the induction plate. If it doesn't feel hot, or only slightly warm, it's an induction hob, and the moka pot won't work without the plate.
