Food which makes your heart sink

GnomeDePlume · 31/10/2023 07:46

Do you have a meal/food which when suggested just makes your heart sink?

For me it is boiled bacon. It just sounds so dreary. Whenever DH suggests it for dinner I am instantly thrown back to childhood and salty boiled bacon cooked in brine served up with boiled to death sliced carrots and fallen boiled potatoes.

DH actually cooks it really well, he rinses the joint thoroughly and cooks it with apples and sometimes cider as well. He serves it with crushed roast potatoes and peas or beans.

But the words 'boiled bacon' take me back to childhood and the dreary, salty meal.

Does anyone else have similar instant responses to certain foods?

I know this is a first world problem and I am lucky to have choices and a DH who cooks most meals.

Lentil soup
Lentil salad
Any kind of nuts in salad
Liver in spag bol

AskingForAFriendAgain · 31/10/2023 14:31

Spam
tongue
corned beef

GnomeDePlume · 31/10/2023 14:38

Why would someone look at spag bol and think 'what this needs is liver'. Liver never crops up as the secret ingredient which pulls a dish together.

Quiche. Bloody quiche! Especially with feta.

Three bean “casserole” - go away!

Chicken in cream and white wine cooked by my MIL - big chunks of overcooked chicken breast in an under seasoned thin sauce. No added salt.

Pennè Arabbiata - no thanks.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 31/10/2023 14:49

Meat. 🤮

leilani83 · 31/10/2023 14:54

Sawing through a huge dry chicken breast fillet - would much rather have thighs/legs or even wings.

Cream of anything soups = slurry

Supermarket sandwiches

rainbowsparkle28 · 31/10/2023 14:54

Light hearted but anything I cannot have (coeliac here 😂)! Particularly fresh baguettes in the supermarket (the smell gets me every time still...), donuts, deep pan super thick pizza, the list goes on....in all seriousness I don't think too much about it but what I would give at times!

Rincol · 31/10/2023 14:55

@GnomeDePlume absolutely! Cooked from scratch really doesn't always mean nice tasting.

They ate those bloody awful potatoes every night for sixty years!

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 31/10/2023 14:58

It’s possible to make it very well - a slightly flavoured cheese, cauliflower cooked quickly enough to make it a bit crispy not limp, a dash of cream and not too much flour. Keep it mildly interesting and it turns into a nice comfort dish rather than just boring stodge.

The only purpose of a mince pie is to stop brandy butter getting on your fingers.

Many many years ago I made a batch of mince pies and brandy butter. DH and I managed to polish off the lot in two sittings. After that we solemnly vowed never to make them again.

To me brandy butter is a waste of brandy and a waste of butter. I like both just not amalgamated together with sugar.

leilani83 · 31/10/2023 15:02

My MIL's rock hard vegan Christmas cake with extra thick icing.

Horriblewoman · 31/10/2023 15:04

Chickpeas - especially in a stew

Fennel - I’ve claimed an allergy, Carrie from SATC style previously to avoid it

as a vegetarian I love a good risotto!

and as a vegetarian I am deeply upset by beetroot being a default option

oh and pubs that only have a meat burger or vegan burger. I want proper cheese and mayo.

stargirl1701 · 31/10/2023 15:06

Stovies with corned beef. I like stovies with sausages though.

DilemmaDelilah · 31/10/2023 15:39

@PinkyDinkyDoodle doesn't it have lemon juice in it? Kebab shop style red cabbage for anyone who is wondering.... 😁

EmmaDilemma5 · 31/10/2023 16:57

Soup. Don't mind the taste but I just find it so unsubstantial.

Totally agree. Never bother to have it. Never order it if out. Once the breads run out it's nothing more than a bowl of disappointment

Joey1976 · 31/10/2023 17:05

So pleased I'm not alone in:

  • pork chops
  • liver/kidneys
  • pizza
  • piles of any food on a plate...just can't stomach it
Ohyeahwaitaminute · 31/10/2023 17:15

@BlazingWorld - never seen the appeal of a pasta bake either.

A Huge Dish of Disappointment

Take well cooked pasta, add sauce. Cram into dish and then overcook in the oven with cheese on top. Dried up pasta on top, mushy pasta below. Yuk.

coxesorangepippin · 31/10/2023 17:21

Fish that has been previously frozen

Just so blah

CatOnAHotShedRoof · 31/10/2023 17:33

Mushroom quiche, mushroom risotto. In fact anything with mushrooms in it. There seems to be an assumption in restaurants that all vegetarians and vegans love mushrooms Halloween Envy <vomit>

@GnomeDePlume I don't think red cabbage is meant to be bitter. It is usually cooked sort of sweet and sour, with vinegar and apples, brown sugar and maybe sultanas and spices - I don't like it that way. My DH makes a delicious coleslaw with red cabbage, and I really really like red cabbage done the way it is served with a kebab, raw but marinated. If anyone knows how they do it I would really love to know! No fancy recipes please, I want it just the same as from a kebab shop.

I haven't made this yet, but plan to. The recipe sounds as it it should work. I think I read a discussion about this very subject here a few weeks or months ago, and the key point was preparing it well before it needs to be eaten.

Shredded Red Cabbage -Turkish Kebab style Salad

Simple, shredded red cabbage that tastes like a Turkish kebab takeaway shop. Also makes a great side dish for Mediterranean dishes.

Pulled pork with sweet potato fries. My idea of hell, slippery meat and sugary chips. Nasty.

Newgirls · 31/10/2023 18:02

Burgers piled high with sauces, melting cheese, sweet brioche bleughh too much going on - don’t even like the photos on the millions of posters in every bus stop

StopStartStop · 31/10/2023 18:15

RicherThanYews · 31/10/2023 08:38

@StopStartStop does your MIL abuse you in other ways or just with instant mash? Bleurgh.

There was powdered cheese sauce with that fish and mash...

Erm...when the dogs got at the turkey she still fed it to her guests, including me. Without giving us the option to refuse.

It was all a long, long time ago.

Elphame · 31/10/2023 18:20
