Food that evokes huge memories

I made a stew this morning. Now stew is not necessarily my favourite food but it holds a special memory for me.

I was in a women's refuge with my 1 year old son after having left my abusive ex who controlled me financially, and was incredibly violent. I had a job in my room but no other cooking apparatus except a saucepan. I had £5 to my name given to me by social services and decided to cook a stew. I had it with a crusty bread roll and I swear it was the best meal I have ever eaten in my life. It was the taste of freedom and safety.

Do you have a food that evokes strong emotions in you? What is it and why?

Chocolate rum truffles.
My late mum's favourite, a big treat for elevensies on Saturdays and holidays.
A much more carefree time.

I love your story. You're a survivor.

Not necessarily strong emotions as such but everytime I eat a tuna sandwich I’m taken back to being a kid and my Nan taking me swimming - we’d sit in the cafe after and my Nan would always get me a tuna sandwich. I don’t even know why she did but now everytime I eat one I’m thinking of memories with my Nanny. Easy days when I was a kid and just had the best time swimming and had no worries. I loved my Nan very very much - she was my whole world and she passed away in 2020.

what a wonderful story you’ve got @Plankingplanks - well done for fighting through it 💛

Yorkshire puddings remind me of my grandma who made wonderful ones.

Heinz ketchup, and tinned tomatoes take me straight back to my grandma's house in Castle Donington, near Derby. Mum and Dad only bought OK Sauce and tin-toms were not a thing in our house.
