Feeling like shit all the time - anyone else?!

By shit I mean run down/burnt out/exhausted. I've felt like this for a long time anyway regardless of how much rest I got but since having DS it's a whole lot worse as I now get muscle twitches, brain fog, dizziness. Has anyone felt like this but then managed to feel even just a bit better? What changes did you make?

Sorry no help at all, but just to say I feel the same! Ever since I gave birth (9m ago) I've felt awful. I've had headaches, dizziness, tiredness regardless of how much sleep I've had, pins and needles that come and go, aches in my legs, ibs symptoms. Honestly I could go on! I've had blood tests for a lot of things but always come back fine! Have you had any tests done?

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 30/10/2023 20:26

Hi there please get a full thyroid blood test and also iron levels checked. I was like this when had my son 23 yrs ago, was so thin and pale and was so low in iron when they did a hair strand test as that tests everything going on in your body. I now have issue with thyroid and dizziness and feeling absolutely exhausted. So please ask for a full thyroid test and insist on it and full blood test. Do as soon as you can and hopefully you will get to the bottom of it.

I felt like this before I went on HRT. This cleared up maybe 50% of these symptoms, I then cut upf out of my diet and started weight training and felt 100% better.

I had blood tests done about a year or so ago. Iron levels were a bit low and was put on tablets but I wouldn't say they've made any difference to how I feel. My sleep isn't great. I frequently get woken in the night. Then if I don't get woken early by ds then i just wake up early anyway. I think the muscle twitches are due to not getting enough sleep, despite often being in bed at 9pm. Sorry about the drip feed, not intentional I'm just brain dead!
Somehow I've mustered up the energy to lose weight (i was a smidge overweight) and now do cardio type exercise twice a week. So I'm trying to do the right things.

Yes, turns out I had a vitamin D deficiency

WhatNoRaisins · 31/10/2023 07:17

Is it like restless legs syndrome? I think can be associated with low magnesium.

mindutopia · 31/10/2023 07:19

How are your B12 and vitamin D? I would get bloods re-done if you last had them a year ago. Do them privately if necessary.

On the face of it, low B12 would jump out at me based on the muscle twitches. But could be a bit of everything. I had low vitamin D and I felt absolutely awful. Like I was sure I must have had cancer or some sort of autoimmune disease, because I couldn't believe that I could feel that close to death and not have something really serious wrong with me. If you do have a deficiency, it needs to be properly managed, not as simple as just taking some tablets from the pharmacy and assuming it will get better.

About a month of vitamin D, and I felt pretty much back to normal again. I've never felt that ill since. It was also about 18 months after having my youngest, so I think bf had something to do with it (if you're bf, vitamin deficiency is really quite likely), even though I was taking vitamins as I should have been while feeding him.

My daughter in law felt like this during the months after first baby. Initially blamed general motherhood exhaustion. GP eventually did a batch of blood tests including B12 levels and she was diagnosed with pernicious anaemia. Now on life long 3 monthly injections of B12 which keep it under control. If she’s careless and doesn’t make her 3 month appointment in time she soon remembers as her symptoms return .

If it’s a year since you had blood tests which required you needing an iron supplement you really should be checked again. Ask if they are including B12 levels in the blood test. Hope you get to the bottom of it and feel better soon.

@mindutopia the print out I got for my bloods was a bit tricky to decipher but I think it's saying my b12 was 301. I don't know about vitamin d.
My ds is 3 so I should be used to lack of sleep by now but I feel worse than I did when he was a newborn

@WhatNoRaisins i get twitches in my legs, arms and eyes randomly so I don't think it's restless legs

I can recommend improving diet and adding a good multivitamin. Pregnancy just sucks you dry. You actually build another body, using stuff from your body!!
The way we eat these days can be very nutrient deficient, and lab tests are not as illuminating as they could be, because it is all based on averages and normals, and average and normal are not especially good measures and have little to do with the individual.

JellyMops · 31/10/2023 12:06

I have been feeling like this so the GP tested my cortisol levels which were low so I've been referred to an endocrinologist.

MrFlibblesEyes · 31/10/2023 12:07

Vitamin c aids iron absorption. Maybe the iron supplements didnt help because you're not absorbing them properly? Have you tried taking them with orange juice?

BaaaBaaaBaaa · 31/10/2023 13:45

@MrFlibblesEyes hi, no I've not tried this. I can give it a go

And in addition to this, dairy products hinder absorption so never take them with milk or yogurt.

I've been trying to get a drs appointment all week to get my bloods done again, keep being told 'no appointments'.
In the meantime i was looking at my results from around a year ago, my B12 was 301, serum ferritin was 6.4. The ferritin result isn't great is it?
