For the first time, I really enjoying it despite it not aging as well as it could.
However she is 42! She calls herself old and middle aged
I'm 42, I still feel young!

I know...I'm 42 as well! I think people in general aged quicker decades ago...also women married and had children a lot younger so by the time you were in your forties, you'd have grown up children and maybe even be a grandmother.

OhNoForever · 29/10/2023 18:13

Where are you watching it? It was reveommended to me the other day but ive never seen it.

Theblackdogagain · 29/10/2023 18:15

I'm watching it on DVD! I've had it hanging around for years as a watch once then charity shop.

Bloody love that film!!!

MidnightOnceMore · 29/10/2023 18:19

Think people grew up younger then, married so young, so they felt old earlier.

I love that film.

IncognitoMam · 29/10/2023 18:21

So many fantastic quotes.

She's fab. Johanna Lumley at the hotel is hilarious 😂

watermelonsugar56 · 29/10/2023 18:23

Great film but I too was flabbergasted watching it for the second time realising she is only supposed to be 42!!

TerfTalking · 29/10/2023 18:23

I’ve just seen it’s available on Amazon Prime Video, assume that’s free if you have Prime? I’m going to log in and watch this tonight! Not seen it for years.

edited to add, no it’s bloody chargeable 😡

PastorCarrBonarra · 29/10/2023 18:30

Pauline Collins is wonderful in this. I also like the actress who plays the bratty daughter - she had also played Rita’s foster child in Corrie which I guess was her big break.

Libertass · 29/10/2023 18:31

It’s a great film, but the general assumption that Shirley is working class is wrong. Joe runs his own business, wears a suit & tie to work & drives a nice car. The Valentines live in a nice suburban area where at least one of their neighbours is a bit posh. By the standards of Liverpool in the 1980s they are, in fact, lower middle class.

Hello Rock!

Love this film, apart from the really upsetting scene where her husband pushes the dinner into her lap 😞

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 29/10/2023 18:38

She was definitely an old 42. Love this film so much though 😊

Gulbekian · 29/10/2023 18:40

Great film!

Love "Wall" and the "Muesli Hound" 😂

marcopront · 29/10/2023 18:43

Did anyone see the play this was based on?

It was a monologue. I saw it at a US army base in Germany.

vernatheraven · 29/10/2023 18:44

Ooohh op I've just put it on I love this film

Figgygal · 29/10/2023 18:47

Tom conte was great in it the eyebrows were something else

pinkfondu · 29/10/2023 18:50

One of my favourites, and when I turned her age I remember being so shocked

EdnaMole · 29/10/2023 18:50

Love that film..but find the theme tune “The Girl Who Used To Be Me” hits hard these days…

LividHol · 29/10/2023 18:53

That’s me spending £5.99 on Shirley Valentine 😂

RedDiamond · 29/10/2023 18:56

I chose to watch this Friday night! I actually have the DVD. Sometimes I feel like Shirley (but divorced) and have spent many happy years sailing around the Greek Islands now.

In the play there's a great bit about her son in the nativity play!

OP - so glad you didn't watch the chopped up, TV edit. They cut all the best lines so it makes no sense.

Beaverbridge · 29/10/2023 18:58

One of my favs. Didn't realise she was only supposed to be 42 in it.

I love that film.

My grandmother announced that she was an old lady at 50. She stopped driving, stooped the very light touch "pin money" job she had for an afternoon a week, and refused to look after children under 5. She got "help" in the house. At the time her children were 21-27, and my DGF had retired.

At 53, I work full time and my dc are 12 and 15. DH and I are a long way from retiring!

Different times.

He says he doesn’t want to make fuck with me.
