Be honest! Do you use the phone while driving?

I’ve noticed sooooo many more drivers in London using their phones while driving post-Covid.

They are making calls (holding phone to ear), texting/typing at lights, and checking phone while moving. First hand I have seen this behaviour.

I do not, but I’m curious, do you do this?

Please be honest, I am curious if anyone gets caught TBH.

With this thread in mind , today I had two oncoming cars swerve into my lane as they looked down at their phones in one short 15 minute journey!

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 30/10/2023 15:44

Nope - saw an accident on the road very close to my home and guess what the dead person was doing!!

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 30/10/2023 15:50

It's in a holder attached to the dashboard.

Interested to hear what the laws are on this wherever you are from. I'm in Ireland. It's illegal to be holding a phone anywhere on your body, and also illegal access information on your phone while driving so guess that covers accessing Google Maps! We can use hands free device for making phone calls. Penalty is €120 fine and 3 penalty points!

Thingamebobwotsit · 30/10/2023 16:11

Hands free only through voice control thingy. And only to let DH know if I am running late.

Had too many friends and family die in car accidents over the years I won't take the risk

DD19 connects her music via an aux and can use Siri to change tracks as her car is too old for Bluetooth connection. She’s the one who told me about the silenced calls while driving. I thought it was just for sleeping!

Moomoomomo · 30/10/2023 16:40

I don't. I live rurally so most of my driving is on 60mph roads. It would only take a split second of distraction to have an accident. However if I pull over to quickly check who has called or messaged me I don't normally turn the car off like I think you are meant to do!

I don't think people realise (or care) how obvious it is when they are on their phone. Even if they are just texting it's so easy to spot the tell tale eyes in lap position.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 30/10/2023 16:44

No and it makes my blood boil when I see other people doing it.

Topseyt123 · 30/10/2023 16:48

No. It is in my bag if I am driving and is ignored if it rings. I'll answer anything necessary once I have arrived at my destination and am safely parked.

Anyone who uses their phone while driving is a twat.

JamSandle · 30/10/2023 16:48

Only if I'm in traffic occasionally.

LaurieFairyCake · 30/10/2023 16:51

I mean this is an anonymous forum so hopefully people are being pretty honest

I break the law all the time, regularly drive over the speed limit on motorways and dual carriageways. I park illegally if I can get away with it.

Done drugs too Grin

I’ve not met anyone who has received a penalty for it TBH.

Anyone on here been caught?

OMG, let's get you in the stocks.
me too, got a speeding fine this year

AngeloMysterioso · 30/10/2023 17:18

I have it in a holder on my dashboard as I use it for sat nav and music, and hands free for calls, but I wouldn’t touch it unless in absolute standstill traffic with the handbrake on. More often than not my DC are in the car with me and it simply isn’t worth the risk.

Bloomingmagnolia · 30/10/2023 17:22

I checked an email whilst in stationary traffic and was caught by the famous Cycling Mikey in Hyde Park (Google him). I got a 200 quid fine and 6 points. Haven’t touched my phone since. It was wrong, I know.

But yes, I see many people on a daily basis using phones whilst in motion. I have never done that (not that I’m trying to excuse what I did).

SaturdayGiraffe · 18/12/2023 12:19

Well I was just parallel to a man who was driving a car while chatting on the phone in his left hand, smoking a cig with his right.
Large white sedan and a grey bearded white man.

If I'm stopped at lights with the hand brake on then I would read or send a quick message.
Never while moving.
Have android auto, so can change navigation or music by voice.

luckylavender · 18/12/2023 12:56

Nope

user1497207191 · 18/12/2023 13:03

Nope, far too dangerous. Roads are terrible these days with so much bad driving, it's more important than ever to concentrate fully on the road.

HelpMeGetThrough · 18/12/2023 13:23

Still illegal and you can be done for it. Same penalty as if you were driving.

gamerchick · 29/10/2023 17:35

Or maybe you could have some fucking self control never been caught, everybody's lying.

I'm not, I never have, even before it was a specific offence. I ring back when I arrive, or pullover somewhere. My sister used to do it all the time and it scared the Hell out of me.
