Is this quince? Photos

Found these growing in my garde. Outside, inside and with a TEASPOON for scale.

They are hard and small, smell mildly of apple. About the size of a conker.

If not quince, what are they? Are they edible?

I can't see a picture.

No picture, but from the description, also look up Medlars.

Picture there now. Tiny, tiny quinces.

Look like quince to me. Make quince jam. Absolutely delicious.

Wolvesart · 28/10/2023 14:34

Looks smaller than the quinces on the trees in our street

TheSandgroper · 28/10/2023 14:57

Yes.

TheFlis · 28/10/2023 15:00

How big is the tree? Quinces are usually a lot bigger than that (size of a large apple) though that does look like one.

SpecialSpaghetti · 28/10/2023 15:04

Crab apple?

TheCatterall · 28/10/2023 15:06

You lucky sausage. I love quince. :)

ASimpleLobsterHat · 28/10/2023 15:07

Is it Japanese quince, which is smaller and more ornamental than traditional quince?

littlematchstickgirl · 28/10/2023 15:19

Yes, definitely quince. They are bitter but you can bake in the oven in a tray with a little water with honey and sugar.

Oigetoffmylawn · 28/10/2023 21:04

I've no idea how big the tree is. I know that sounds ridiculous, but the tree is behind a very large laurel bush and these sort of poke out the bottom of it.

Can you eat cooked crab apples? I'll make quince jelly if they are quince. When are they ripe?

Well cooked crab apples wouldn't do you any harm, but they'd be absolutely disgusting 😂.
Crab apple jelly is lovely with turkey or pork though.
They look like some type of quince though.

Oigetoffmylawn · 28/10/2023 21:10

Having googled Japanese quince, I think that's exactly what they are. Thanks!
