Opening windows in cold weather

I love fresh air coming through the house but obviously this is harder now the weather is colder and damp. How often do you have your windows open at this time of year in UK weather?

Ours are open now
Back doors , side doors, the living room and the bathroom window
I'd shut them around 4pm when it gets a bit chillier

DisplayPurposesOnly · 28/10/2023 12:33

All the time. Bedroom window open all night year-round, shut during the day in winter. Bathroom window currently open, will shut later; is opened daily after showers. Back door has been open for a couple of hours to let pets run in and out; again, open daily for various times depending on weather.

Chewbecca · 28/10/2023 12:33

Every day.
Bedroom fanlight is open all the time, all year round. It's why I wouldn't want to buy a house with fashionable but no fanlight windows!
Back door is open for a blast each day.
Other windows just a little most days.

Overnight. It’s going to be cold indoors in the morning anyway, and most mornings I immediately leave for the office so don’t really care.

megletthesecond · 28/10/2023 12:33

Just for a few minutes a day this time of year. The bathroom window is always half open on the latch though, only gets closed when it's almost freezing out there.

BarbedButterfly · 28/10/2023 12:34

They are all open now but not especially cold here. Always open for a minimum of 15 minutes a day

Usernamesarenoteasy · 28/10/2023 12:34

My bedroom window is open all night, and still open now. In fact the back doors are open at the moment too for the dogs.

Wolfen · 28/10/2023 12:34

I agree and do try to open them once a day even if it's for 5 mins, but in really cold weather, I open them while I'm cleaning mainly.

PinkflowersWhiteBerries · 28/10/2023 12:34

As Display says. I am in Scotland. Fresh air helps keep the internal condensation / damp away.

youdontneedtopoo · 28/10/2023 12:34

Our bedroom door is open every night
Hallway window open in the day
I open every window in the house for a morning once a week when I clean

ihavebecomecomfortablynumb · 28/10/2023 12:35

I have my little bedroom window open all the time and often open downstairs windows from time to time just to let some fresh air in.

Reach9kat · 28/10/2023 12:37

I try to open bedroom windows every morning for an hour or so to get fresh air in and stop build up of co2. Bathroom window after every shower and bath. Kitchen windows when ever I am cooking.

GasPanic · 28/10/2023 12:39

Never. Don't need to. I don't make the house damp and run a dehumidifier and extraction. It's cheaper than heating the house up after opening the all windows.

Some people seem obsessed with open windows and "lovely fresh air".

I genuinely love fresh air coming through the house though. Nothing wrong with that, just like there's nothing wrong with you using a dehumidifier.

My bedroom window, bathroom and toilet window open everyday all year round. Ds chooses when his is open but when he's away to school I open it for the day. Back door open most days for an hour if not the window in the livingroom is open. Kitchen window when I'm cooking

YouAndMeAndThem · 28/10/2023 12:41

Upstairs they're open very morning for an hour or so, even if it's freezing. Just to let some of the dampness from overnight out. Downstairs, in the kitchen after cooking, bathroom window is always open, living room almost never in the winter.

mrssunshinexxx · 28/10/2023 12:42

Every day

Disorganisedmess2023 · 28/10/2023 12:42

In the spring and summer all my windows are usually open in the day time. At this time of year, my bathroom window is open all day and my bedroom window is open for an hour or so. My hall window is slightly open on the latch. It doesn't feel like enough though and I miss them being open more.

Bedroom always( little top one) open 24/7 . Bathroom locked ajar. Kitchen open after cooking. Utility door open a few times a day for dog to wee.

TwinMummaX · 28/10/2023 12:45

I open bedroom/bathroom windows every morning closed in the afternoon. Kitchen window open when cooking. Patio doors wide open couple of times a week when im cleaning

Devilsmommy · 28/10/2023 12:45

Kitchen window open all year round as I'm a smoker. Bedroom and living room slightly open in daytime but closed with open vents the rest

Cotswoldbee · 28/10/2023 12:46

Bathroom windows are on vent position almost all the time and wide open after baths/showers (yes we do have extractor fans and yes they do work effectively).
Back doors are open much of the time so the dogs can come and go. In bitter cold / wet weather the dogs have to ask to go out.

Because its good for you & cheaper (ie free) than putting a dehumidifier and extractor on permanently. So much evidence that air quality in most houses is quite poor. Surely you open the windows if you're cooking or using cleaning products or anything scented?

Same

Mumaway · 28/10/2023 12:49

Everyday. Usually have back kitchen door open all day unless raining sideways or going out, bathroom windows always on night lock ajar, open wide as necessary. Bedroom windows open to air every few days. Vents on windows always open.
