Paying IHT and Probate

I've recently offered on a probate property on the understanding it was applied for 4 months ago, so assumed there could be up to 2 more months to wait. However the estate agent said this week that the vendors have just been told how much IHT to pay. This has got me worried. Can the probate application have already been in, or has it taken 4 months to ascertain the IHT liability and only now can probate be applied for?

So probate can't be issued until the inheritance tax has been paid . They will issue it then .

Also when you submit the probate paperwork you send forms to the HMRC , the HMRC then contact you and tell you how much tax is owned , once that tax is paid you then get the probate . It's quite a long process .
