Anyone know what this is

Not sure where to post this but needed some traffic for quick replies

My car started making a rattling noise earlier today and by this evening it sounded like I was dragging scrap metal down the road as I was driving, very loud, very embarrassing. Anyway I'll take it to a garage tomorrow but just wondering if anyone knows what it could be. The round metal disc behind driver wheel appears loose, compared to all other 3 wheels which are firmly stuck. Most importantly, is it safe for me to drive my son to school like that tomorrow? Its a 10 min drive, no one else can take him so just want to check if anyone has an idea what it could be? Breaks are fine when driving, its just the noise really

Have you checked the exhaust? Could be loose and dragging on the floor?

BakedTattie · 25/10/2023 19:40

I’ve had this before. Once it was the brake disc. And the next time it was the brake disc dust cover that had come loose.
i drove really slowly and only a very short distance (to the garage) both times.

I wouldn’t risk it

Nothing appears to actually be loose and touching the floor, onlt this disx that appears to be rattling, I did a quick google and i think it is the break disc cover like you said

The round metal disc behind the wheel is your brake disc. The fact it's wobbly is rather alarming and your braking will be compromised.

HappiestSleeping · 25/10/2023 20:40

It sounds brakes related to me. If the brake pads are worn excessively, then they make a grating sound as a warning.

If it is that, or the discs are loose then braking will likely be compromised. I would not drive it until it has been checked out.

No I wouldnt use the car until it's been sorted OP.

I has something similar - was convinced it was going to be expensive. As a pp has said it was a dust cover. One wack with a hammer and gone - no charge AND was told not needed

@NannyGythaOgg hopefully I'll get the same experience, my smp finishes next week 😖

I agree, sounds like the stone guard. Better off without. Should only cost pennies to remove.
