Dog on the beach

Redebs · 25/10/2023 12:47

So I'm here on the beach with two small grandchildren. Just about to sit on the only dry rock (I really NEEDED to sit down) when a smallish dog runs up and tries to pee on it. Grandkids aren't happy with dogs running up to them and peeing on their shoes.

Owner nowhere in sight, although they must have just arrived at beach.

I tell the dog 'No! Off you go!" but it ignores me and carries on sniffing. Total disregard. It cocks a leg, so I take a hold of the collar and guide it away. I'm annoyed, but calm and gentle. It has sprayed over the rock and immediately runs to another part of it to spray again. I repeat, taking collar and pulling dog away. Dog is unconcerned about it and quite happy sniffing everything.

Owner comes up and starts being all passive aggressive. At first I thought he had come to retrieve his dog or apologise, but turns out he wants to accuse me of 'pulling his dog'. I was about to accept his apology, but then had to assure him I was appropriately gentle with his dog but I didn't want dog urine on the children.

He protested that it was a public beach ( presumably giving his dog freedom to pee on anyone) and it didn't look like I was gentle. I again assured him I was gentle and that I have had dogs myself. He replied that that didn't count for HIS dog.

While he was muttering away, his dog squatted and pooped amongst the rocks and I pointed to it and helpfully asked him if he had a bag. He said he did, because he was a RESPONSIBLE dog owner. I replied, 'Excellent!'

He went away complaining to anyone near that I had PULLED his dog and how totally unbelievable it was.

I suffer from extreme anxiety and depression, so I'm venting here to get it out of my system.

I held it together throughout. Dignified, calm, reasonable. Just feeling so angry now.

Bluddy ignorant man.

@Saschka

It didn't piss all over her grandchildren's shoes though did it and it was never going to. We established that a long time ago on this thread. Do you think that you and the 8 billion other humans on the planet are entitled to flush piss and crap into the sea? I guess you'll say that's different, yes?

No, I don’t think there are many people in favour of untreated human sewage being dumped into the sea either. That is supposedly what I pay Thames Water £300 per year to prevent.

I swim in the sea regularly, why on earth would I be in favour of that?

It doesn’t have the right to piss on OP’s seat, or over her grandchildren’s shoes!

The dog did not piss on OP's seat it pissed on a rock . OP sitting on a rock did not transform a rock into a seat .

ginasevern · 25/10/2023 18:21

@Saschka

I just find it breathtaking hypocracy when people take the moral high ground about other species, when the human race causes the most unimaginably vile pollution on earth. No other species creates the gazillion tons of waste matter we produce and no other species is capable of destroying the planet.

Were you trying to sound clever by pointing out the dog was having a poo and asking if they had a bag? Sounds smug and pretty stupid to me.

XenoBitch · 25/10/2023 18:50

You were pretty daft to grab at a strange dog.

SM4713 · 25/10/2023 19:02

Over it now. Next time I'll take a stick! WTF!

If you NEED to sit down due to your ill health, then take your own fold up seat instead of sitting on a dog peed on rock?? What would you have done if that particular rock hadn't have dried out in the sun? What if someone else was sitting on the only dry rock??? What then? Blame them for taking YOUR SEAT! 🙄

It wasn’t ‘her seat’, it was a stone on the beach that she wasn’t even next to when the dog approached it!! 🙄And it didn’t piss on the kids shoes either.

Justcallmebebes · 25/10/2023 13:50

Eww no. Dogs shouldn't be on beaches. It's disgusting

Tbf dogs are allowed on some even most beaches.

We need dog-free beaches and parks IMO. Not all of them should be dog free as I appreciate some dog walkers enjoy them , but some of them should be because of issues like this.

The fact some people are thinking her GC should have had to move from the dry rock to give the dog space to pee shows this and they should all defer to the dog . My issue would have been more the fact that the owner was too far away from their dog to control it.

It’s not always easy to share spaces with dogs nowadays due to how some owners are so it’s best if some places are just completely free of them.

@oakleaffy

I've worked with dogs and lived around all sorts of dogs all my life (including nervous rescue and disabled ones). I'm now in my sixties. Most of my friends and family have also had dogs throughout their lives. Never, ever once have I seen a dog urinate on a child or an adult for that matter. Yet you say you have seen this several times. That's strange. Would you like to explain the circumstances?

Absolutely.
I won’t name the park as we live near there, but it has a cafe and there is a queue and a fridge with ice cream, Idiot owners let the mutts piss up the fridge where children are choosing stuff , they piss up the chairs where people are sitting

And it regularly causes an issue
Male dogs are so antisocial that they even piss in shops.
Owner oblivious to the shittapoo on it’s overly long leash.

The standard of dog training is dire since covid.

This is another example of why dogs should not be allowed off lead in a public place.

Oh please 😅 dogs can still and will pee on a lead ....

BitterAndTwistedClub · 25/10/2023 20:19

You’re getting a hard time OP, but I’m with you. I would have done the same, in fact I think you were quite restrained.

MissyB1 · 25/10/2023 20:32

Count yourself lucky you didn’t get bitten. You were very stupid to start grabbing and dragging around a strange dog. Poor example to set to the kids too.

Meh. Dogs have always been part of the way of life here, part of our history, culture, towns, countryside, work and leisure. The idea of overturning all that to suit your personal prissy dislike of these wonderful creatures is laughable. Banning dogs from public spaces? Get the fuck outta here.

CandyCane75 · 25/10/2023 21:17

To be fair - if anyone ever touched/pulled my dogs collar I would have red mist. Would you be happy if someone pulled your grandchild away by their coat hood because they were near to them on a public beach and they didn't want them there??

Yes, I would apologise if my dog had run upto someone, but ultimately its a public dog friendly beach, so one may anticipate dogs running around surely?

I read that as take a stick to throw to distract dog, not hit it....

It’s clear from this thread and others, that not everyone wants to be around off leash dogs- including some dog lovers.

I suggested making provision that would suit both groups, and you reply aggressively and unreasonably as if I suggested we dump dogs in a lake when I merely suggested we make some parks and beaches dog free.

You've clearly illustrated the problem of an increasing amount of entitled and selfish dog worshippers/owners - can’t acknowledge not everyone feels the same way about dogs and can’t be reasoned with.

And btw dog ownership (and dog bites) have increased exponentially in the past few years. I didn’t see half as many dogs growing up in the 90s be it on beaches, in cafes, in parks. Never had one picnic disrupted by a dog until 2018 and since then it’s happened 3 times. Also spent a huge amount of my time running about outside as a kid and never had a dog jump on me until last year and I barely even go outside now . Things are different now. 🙄

So, no it’s you who should GTFOH and understand we’re all different.

Just me? 😂

Well dogs only pee where other dogs went before - its their way of communicating, like leaving a comment on a forum thread. If dog tried to pee on your grandkids shoes... I have some bad news for you.

They often do but they don't 'only' pee where other dogs went before. New build gardens? Beaches after sea has just been in? Etc. My dog wees in my garden. She's the only dog whose ever been in there. Is she communicating to herself or does she just need a wee?

StarDolphins · 25/10/2023 21:54

YABU. You know there’s probably rats pissing all round the beach & it doesn’t sound like the dog did wee on your grandchildren.

If it’s a dog friendly beach then not much you can do really.

SchadenfreudeIstMeinMittelname · 25/10/2023 15:20

Why, because they don’t wee when they’re on the lead?

AlwaysGinPlease · 25/10/2023 22:22

@Redebs you'll take a stick for what reason? You should be careful. Some owners may take that stick off you and place it somewhere painful. You don't sound like you're anxious, you sound like a trouble maker.

Prescottdanni123 · 25/10/2023 23:15

@Astonymission

They weren't sitting on the rock. OP was about to sit on it. Her grandkids may have stayed standing up or playing. The dog wouldn't have known that the OP needed to sit down. He just saw a rock he wanted to pee on.

Completely agree with you, @Astonymission
I own a well trained dog who isn't allowed to run up to people {she's not interested in strangers} she's also not a scrounger.
SO many bloody dogs try and snatch food of stranger's plates.

The amount of out of control 'owners' that are about is mind boggling.
Idiot muddy dogs that come leaping up with muddy paws and slobbery faces

The simpering owners then get arsey when people rightly complain.

Control your bloody dog!
''control'' doesn't mean let the bugger off on a 10 metre lead that trails about and gets into a tangle around children's legs.

One dickhead locally thinks it's funny when his mutt belts around the Park and leaps into the children's area , clearing the railings.

He sits on a wall like a simp, while his mutt rampages around.

I'm not surprised so many people {and those who own well trained dogs} are sick to the back teeth of untrained mutts and their entitled owners.
