Dog on the beach

So I'm here on the beach with two small grandchildren. Just about to sit on the only dry rock (I really NEEDED to sit down) when a smallish dog runs up and tries to pee on it. Grandkids aren't happy with dogs running up to them and peeing on their shoes.

Owner nowhere in sight, although they must have just arrived at beach.

I tell the dog 'No! Off you go!" but it ignores me and carries on sniffing. Total disregard. It cocks a leg, so I take a hold of the collar and guide it away. I'm annoyed, but calm and gentle. It has sprayed over the rock and immediately runs to another part of it to spray again. I repeat, taking collar and pulling dog away. Dog is unconcerned about it and quite happy sniffing everything.

Owner comes up and starts being all passive aggressive. At first I thought he had come to retrieve his dog or apologise, but turns out he wants to accuse me of 'pulling his dog'. I was about to accept his apology, but then had to assure him I was appropriately gentle with his dog but I didn't want dog urine on the children.

He protested that it was a public beach ( presumably giving his dog freedom to pee on anyone) and it didn't look like I was gentle. I again assured him I was gentle and that I have had dogs myself. He replied that that didn't count for HIS dog.

While he was muttering away, his dog squatted and pooped amongst the rocks and I pointed to it and helpfully asked him if he had a bag. He said he did, because he was a RESPONSIBLE dog owner. I replied, 'Excellent!'

He went away complaining to anyone near that I had PULLED his dog and how totally unbelievable it was.

I suffer from extreme anxiety and depression, so I'm venting here to get it out of my system.

I held it together throughout. Dignified, calm, reasonable. Just feeling so angry now.

Bluddy ignorant man.

He should have been with his dog. If he wasn't in sight then he wasn't in control of it. I wouldn't have touched a strange dog but I don't think you were in the wrong.

hattie43 · 25/10/2023 14:07

Congratulations you've just taught your grandchildren it's ok to pull strange unknown dogs . What if the next one bites . Very irresponsible.
It's a beach . Available to everyone.

AlwaysGinPlease · 25/10/2023 14:11

Is it your own private beach Op? No. You were being petty and ridiculous. Taking the dog by the collar was an outrageous thing to do.

@Frequency do you know how crazy you sound by saying a dog deliberately pissed on your child. 🙄

fluffiphlox · 25/10/2023 14:15

You’re making yourself sound a bit bonkers. I don’t mind dogs on the whole, but I wouldn’t go manhandling one I didn’t know. Why were you so territorial about a rock on a beach?

Guiltyfeethavegotnorhythm0 · 25/10/2023 14:16

Regardless if you were using the rock as a seat to the dog it's still a rock and is fair game . Sorry .

Frequency · 25/10/2023 14:18

Well, obviously not deliberately in the way people do things deliberately. It is a dog. It is not capable of complex thought in that way, but I stupidly assumed that bit went without saying Hmm

Clearly, what I meant was it was aiming its stream at DD rather than it made a concious, considered choice to pee on her.

Prescottdanni123 · 25/10/2023 13:58

@Justcallmebebes

I suppose dogs shouldn't be near lakes, mountains, forests or fields either. So where the hell is it ok for them to be according to you?

Not on beaches

SoupDragon · 25/10/2023 14:51

Justcallmebebes · 25/10/2023 14:22

Not on beaches

why? What's special about beaches? I mean, they aren't clean, sterile environments are they?

Prescottdanni123 · 25/10/2023 14:54

@Justcallmebebes

But why? Why beaches and nowhere else? Because you like beaches but don't like other outdoor areas? Just go to ones that don't allow dogs and stay out of dog friendly ones.

GoodOldEmmaNess · 25/10/2023 14:55

If it was a park bench it would be ok to be irate about a dog pissing on it. Since it was a rock, YABU.

Queucumber · 25/10/2023 12:51

You wee-policed a dog?

😂

Oh goodie, today’s “I hate dogs” thread.

This topic should actually have its own board

😅😅😅

Good job the dog didn't bite.

This !

Nickinoo22 · 25/10/2023 15:09

I am a bit confused on this post . Between the dog peeing on the only dry rock on the beach and the children not liking dogs peeing on there shoes ? Was it the rock or shoes ??

Anyway, whichever, you were lucky that the offending dog was good natured !

oakleaffy · 25/10/2023 15:18

@Redebs Next time a dog approaches you do a loud “ Pshhhhtttt!” Sound - it often causes them to back off.
The dog owner seeing your discomfiture should have called his mutt off-
Except he probably has ZERO command over it .
Don’t blame you being annoyed at a mutt pissing on your children’s shoes.
Way too many untrained dogs about since Covid.

SchadenfreudeIstMeinMittelname · 25/10/2023 15:20

This is another example of why dogs should not be allowed off lead in a public place.

AlwaysGinPlease · 25/10/2023 14:13

I have seen several times male dogs cocking legs against small children.
They can and do piss up children.

I did the pshhhtt noise and the low 'No!'
Dog had no idea. Totally ignored me. Didn't even seem to notice being moved either 😁

Dog was peeing on everything. Must have been hollow.

I don't expect beaches to be hygienic, but fresh, wet, male dog urine is unpleasant for most people if sprayed right where they are standing.

Over it now. Next time I'll take a stick!

Dogs usually pee where other dogs have already peed so he was probably doing you a favour.

Prescottdanni123 · 25/10/2023 15:38

If a dog standing right next to you starts cocking it's leg, you swiftly sidestep and tug any grandchildren out of the firing zone too surely?

Not just stand and watch while it raises its leg right up and unleashes an endless stream of urine all over your shoes?

Flossflower · 25/10/2023 15:45

You did the correct thing. Yes the dog can pee on a rock, but the dog should either be trained not to run up to people or be on a lead. The owner should have been within sight. I don’t think the man would have spoken to you like that if you were another man!
We were playing cricket in a very large park once. A dog came and cocked his legs on the cricket stumps ( plastic stumps on a stand, soft ball). My husband was very cross with the owner as clearly they hadn’t had the dog under control but she did give us a bottle of water to wash the stumps down with.

Bambooshoot · 25/10/2023 15:48

Cloclo93 · 25/10/2023 12:56

If a dog tried to pee on my shoes or my kids I probably would of booted into the sea lol

This - I would have “guided” a dog that was about to pee on me or any small child away with a very forceful foot! And I would do the same to any adult human - we wouldn’t put up with a person peeing on our feet so why should dogs get a free pass? Gross that we have to put up with this. You were very kind and restrained, much more than I would have been. That pee machine should have been on a lead so it’s owner could make sure it would only urinate in an appropriate unused (or wash away) spot.

Prescottdanni123 · 25/10/2023 15:50

@Bambooshoot

Or why not just move your foot if you see a dog raising its leg? Instead of standing there and getting soaked or 'firmly' nudging someone else's dog.

Justcallmebebes · 25/10/2023 15:50

Prescottdanni123 · 25/10/2023 14:54

Because there are far too may irresponsible dog owners who think that its perfectly acceptable for their dogs to shit on beaches. It's not
