Telegram App - do I need to be suspicious?

Hi all,

NC for this post as I’ve discussed it IRL but long time Mumsnetter.

I was peering over DH’s shoulder earlier and noticed he has the Telegram App. What is it and what is it used for? We use text/messenger/whatsapp etc. so why do you think he has this app? I am instantly suspicious and I’m not even sure why? Can someone reassure me that this is completely innocent and stop my mind going crazy right now?

TIA x

Is he a masters swimmer? It's the British Champs starting Friday and we need to download the app to see out heat and lane. Dunno what else it's used for, cos I install it, then delete it in 5 days time.

NormaLouiseBates · 24/10/2023 22:15

It's probably nothing but just ask him?

I use it to chat to a friend in the states. The main difference I think between it and the likes of WhatsApp/iMessage is that you don't need the other person's phone number, just their telegram name.

Lemsipper · 24/10/2023 22:16

Ive used it to join a social media group were we didnt want strangers knowing our numbers. Could be innocent could not be. Ask or snoop

ItsMeNotTheProblem · 24/10/2023 22:45

Can’t say for your DH of course but I use it as I’m part of certain groups/broadcast channels, the main ones being about bargain hunting 😆
They often post Amazon miss prices and voucher codes.

ItsMeNotTheProblem · 24/10/2023 22:48

DH also tells me that Telegram is where DBro gets support for his dodgy Firestick - channel listings for football etc. something to do with the encryption levels and not needing to swap numbers.

The only people I know who use it are conspiracy theorists not wanting to share their phone number, and those setting up hook ups.

TheOccupier · 24/10/2023 23:06

Also drug dealers and terrorists, I've heard...

Maddy70 · 24/10/2023 23:19

It's a secure jessengung service. If he dabbles in crypto its very popular.
My friends use it instead of WhatsApp.

PlatinumBrunette · 24/10/2023 23:21

Haha! It’s just a messenger app, I use it with some friends, I’m not a drug dealer, conspiracy theorist, or a terrorist 😂

ivegotthisyeah · 24/10/2023 23:24

Fire stick here too!

Bonneylass · 24/10/2023 23:33

My partner uses it for betting / horse racing tips. Sigh…

Is there any reason for you to be suspicious? If yes, if I were you I would probably go down his phone (albeit would make me feel uneasy doing this, so probably isn’t right). If you ask him and he is up to something he will delete any evidence before you can check

mugwrittenonmyface · 25/10/2023 08:07

Thanks everyone 🙏
So he definitely isn’t a swimmer lol. Dodgy fire stick is the answer I think. I think I’ll just casually ask how he communicates with dodgy fire stick man and go from there. I would imagine they don’t like sharing their phone numbers being dodgy and all that. No other reason to be suspicious, just thought it was odd.
