Advent calendars

When I was young, and in fact when my children were young, advent calendars were crusty with glitter, and the numbers on the doors were small and well hidden amongst the intricacies of the picture. It was an adventure to find the right number for the door every time you opened one.
I thought this year I would revisit my youth and buy one for my DH and me to open. I carefully chose one online (I haven't been able to go shopping for months) that specified it had glitter. It arrived today, and indeed it does have glitter, but it is that tiny faintly greenish stuff that doesn't really show, rather than the larger, silvery, crusted layer I was hoping for, the kind that used to fall off and get everywhere. And the numbers are HUGE and really obvious, so no fun in hunting for them every day.
I am so disappointed. Is it just me... or are things just too easy now? And where can I find an old-style advent calendar?

I saw some lovely old fashioned ones in a garden centre the other day.

Have you looked on Amazon at Richard Sellmer and Coppenwrath @DilemmaDelilah ? I prefer the old fashioned type with just a picture behind the door, and as you say it must be a challenge to find the right number and have an unfeasible amount of glitter on it as well as a suitable festive subject.

OP i know what you mean. Back in the late 70s/early 80s when DB and i had ours the glitter went everywhere when you picked it up. I remember heavily crusted silver glitter.

My friend bought me an utterly fabulous one last week called ‘the epoch before Christmas’. It’s essentially a volcano with dinosaurs you pop out to make a scene every day. It’s AMAZING

Anyway, back on topic, if it’s mostly lack of glitter that’s the issue can you go a bit blue Peter on it and slather it on yourself? Would go some way to hiding the numbers too.
