Who is your “SIL”?

Is it:

  1. your DH’s sister
  2. your brother’s wife
  3. your DH’s brother’s wife
  4. 1 and 2 only
  5. all of 1, 2 and 3?

Having a not-quite-an-argument with my DH.

maimeo · 23/10/2023 22:52

One and two only. Not related at all to three!

SlippinJanie · 23/10/2023 22:52

All of them

SarahLKelp · 23/10/2023 22:52

All of them

CurlewKate · 23/10/2023 22:52

All of the above. And, Mumsnet notwithstanding, for those of us no longer living in the 1950s, DH can be replaced by DP!

Sommerled · 23/10/2023 22:52

All of them

All

Wimpod · 23/10/2023 22:52

I had to think there. But yeah all of them. 🥴

BarbieKew · 23/10/2023 22:52

All of the above, for me. Might depend how close you are in option 3.

Definitely/legally/traditionally the first two, but I do call my husband’s brother’s wife my SIL.

RosesAndHellebores · 23/10/2023 22:53

My SILs are DH's sisters. He has no brothers and I have no siblings. If that were different, all the options.

Wimpod · 23/10/2023 22:53

If his brother is my BIL, I guess it follows that his wife is my SIL 🤷🏻

Really?!

Are your DH’s brother’s DC related to you?

Weird thinking about it. My brother's wife is my SIL as he is my brother. DH isn't my brother so why is his sister my SIL.

Patchworksack · 23/10/2023 22:53

All of them.

murasaki · 23/10/2023 22:54

I'm surprised to be in the minority. But then I don't really call second cousins etc cousins, and have no truck with random adults called auntie and uncle.

NouveauNom · 23/10/2023 22:54

1 and 2 only. I don't know if we have a term in English for one's husband's brother's wife. (Although I'd probably still call #3 my SIL for convenience).

I hear you, but I think the law begs to differ…

In other cultures there’s specific names for all of them.

TheFormidableMrsC · 23/10/2023 22:55

My ex-DH's, brother's wives remain my SILS. My late brother's wife has never been a SIL as such, she was not interested in having that relationship and that is ok if a bit sad for me.

Dragonsandcats · 23/10/2023 22:56

All of them.

What did you think OP?
