Have you switched your heating on yet?

Usually we have our heating on by this time of the year. So far, we’ve not used it once!

Who has started using their heating and when?

I guess it will be area and house dependent. We’re in London but only have single glazing and 14ft ceilings.

Yes. Not feeling particularly cold but purely to get washing dry. It’s that tricky time of year when stuff stays damp for ages otherwise.

DisforDarkChocolate · 23/10/2023 08:08

Yup, last week but not on any schedule. Just on for a bit when it's very cold. It's very cold this morning and we had our first minus temperature last week.

geniap · 23/10/2023 08:08

Not yet, I've just moved to flat with a hot water tank that that along with the tumble drier seems to be heating the whole flat so far.
It's also less cold than usual, I think?

APocketOfGooseFood · 23/10/2023 08:10

I’ve switched it back on, but we have timed periods and a thermostat set at 18C, and so far it’s only cut in for a couple of sessions. So much depends on where you are in the country, what sort of house you have, how warm you like it, and how well insulated you are.

It has been an unseasonably mild autumn so far, though.

ApolloandDaphne · 23/10/2023 08:10

Absolutely. There is frost outside and the house is freezing.

Allthingsdecember · 23/10/2023 08:11

We’ve had ours on a few times over the last week or two. I think it will come on each morning now, based on the weather report.

I’m in the north and have two little ones to keep warm though.

Itwasfinetillitwasnt · 23/10/2023 08:25

Yorkshire.
Since Sunday 15th (but only as needed). I can't mobilise much so get cold. I also have two disabled dc who are affected by the cold. We've probably had it on most days but only if the temperature gets below 16.

DustyLee123 · 23/10/2023 08:25

Yes.

lavenderlou · 23/10/2023 08:27

Yes, last week, mornings and evenings. It is set to 18.5 so clicks off if not needed but the house was getting chilly in the mornings. Also had lots of washing hanging indoors as it's been raining so much.

BitofaStramash · 23/10/2023 08:28

Several weeks ago - Scotland

Pigeonqueen · 23/10/2023 08:29

Not yet. We’re in Norfolk and it’s damp and raining a lot but not actually cold. We went to Norwich for a day out yesterday and all walked around in T shirts and hoodies! We’re using the dehumidifier a lot at home though as it’s so wet everywhere and don’t want damp to set in.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 23/10/2023 08:31

It's come on a couple of mornings this last week or so, I never switched it off the thermostat is set to 18°, we live rurally and the house is old, single glazed with no cavity wall. I live in East Anglia.

Pinotwoman82 · 23/10/2023 08:33

We had ours in for 3 hours last Monday, and I’ve just switched it on for a hour this morning. I wanted to hold off till November but it was getting a bit too chilly. If it was up to DH it would be on constantly, as he is walking around with shorts and t shirt 🙄

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 23/10/2023 08:35

Yep have had it on in the mornings and odd evenings for around 2 weeks now, I’m in Scotland and we have a had fair few frosty days

Lottie4 · 23/10/2023 08:36

I set ours last week 18c for an hour in morning. It was cold enough twice to come on and one morning I boosted it as lots of rain around and house felt cold and damp.

WeighDownOnMeStayTillMorning · 23/10/2023 08:37

God yeah it's been on for weeks! And this morning it's -1 so think that's basically it now until March.

mylittleyumyum · 23/10/2023 08:38

It's been off and on since late September, whenever we need the chill off.

We had a new boiler fitted this year and with the insulation and double glazing we're finding we don't need to have it on for long as the house holds the heat.

Husband had to defrost my car this morning as it was icy overnight.

Gilead · 23/10/2023 08:40

It’s 1 degree here (NE) so have put it on.

KnittedCardi · 23/10/2023 08:46

We've only had ours on for a couple of hours so far. When it was really rainy all day it needed a boost in the evening, not because it was cold, it just felt damp. Haven't had it on yet in the mornings. If it is frosty, it's generally sunny, so that warms the house up pretty quickly. Misty today. South facing in Surrey.

UnevenBalance · 23/10/2023 09:03

Yes.
Around here we’ve already had a few nights where it has as been frosty.
Temperature in tte house below 18oC in the evening.
Too cold for me Wo the heating on.

im sure they have put the heating on in Scotland too - have you seen the snow there?

mondaytosunday · 23/10/2023 09:04

Ive had my gas fire in in the livingroom a few times, but not the heating. Hoping to make it to November!

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 23/10/2023 09:07

Yes I put it on in early October because a)I don't want to have to heat up a cold stone house from too-cold and b) I was somewhere warm until early October and the contrast was challenging.
It is below zero in the mornings here (north of Scotland)

EerilyDecorated · 23/10/2023 09:07

Ours is never off, the thermostat manages it automatically (have it set to 13 overnight and during the day and 18 first thing and in the evening). It has come on a few times in the mornings now but not in the evenings I don't think

DyslexicPoster · 23/10/2023 09:11

Yes it's gone on this week as the boiler was serviced last week. It was too cold last year so trying to not get that cold this year

Nonentity2023 · 23/10/2023 09:15

Yes it’s been on for weeks here (Scotland). It was -1 when I left the house for work at 7am.

I’m counting down the days until my new boiler is installed in a couple of weeks as my current one is ancient and struggling. A bit like me 😊
